Instructional Assistant

Under the direction of the Dean of Allied Health, Kinesiology, and Public Safety, the Instructional Assistant provides support for classroom, lab, and field training in the Fire Technology program. Responsibilities include instructional support, clerical and logistical duties, equipment and supply management, student mentorship, and support for program operations. Performs other related duties as may be assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

An instructional assistant is designed to support instruction, maintain safety, and ensure operational efficiency, while clearly maintaining that instructional authority and student evaluation are conducted by faculty.

Representative Duties

E = Indicates Essential Duties of the Position

  • Assists students in classroom, lab, and field training activities, including skill stations and live fire burns. (E)
  • Assists in the administration of projects, and in the preparation of skill demonstrations. (E)
  • Supports on and off campus lab exercises under instructor facilitation. (E)
  • Updates and maintains records of attendance according to established procedures. (E)
  • Assists with routine reports, training documentation, purchase requests, and supply orders. (E)
  • Assists students in the use of tools, equipment, PPE, and safety practices. (E)
  • Distributes and performs inspections and preventative maintenance, cleanliness, and minor repairs on program tools, gear, and equipment. (E)
  • Orders, tracks, and inventories classroom supplies, PPE, training props, and apparatus. (E)
  • Coordinates and performs the ordering, receiving, distribution, use, tracking, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with District procedures. (E)
  • Assists in recruiting students during outreach functions. (E)
  • Assists with supporting program operations by coordinating logistics for training events, drills, and field exercises. (E)
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Any combination equivalent to: college-level coursework in fire technology or a related field, and one year of experience working with fire service training, equipment, or fire service instructional support.

Licenses and/or Other Requirements:

  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Completion of NWCG S-130:
    Firefighter Training
  • FEMA IS-700:
    Introduction to the National Incident Management System (NIMS)
  • CPR/First Aid/EAD
Other Information

Knowledge of:

  • Firefighting procedures, training apparatus and equipment uses.
  • NWCG S-130:
    Firefighter Training with hands-on skills and safety, including fire behavior, safety procedures (LCES, 18 Watchouts), hand tools, water handling, fire line construction, PPE, incident command basics, and basic fire suppression tactics.
  • Fire service tools, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), equipment, safety procedures, and training props.
  • Inventory methods and recordkeeping practices.
  • Proper storage, and handling of hazardous materials.
  • Technical aspects of fire service training and equipment.
  • Basic computer operation, including Microsoft Office and spreadsheet applications.
  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping techniques.
  • Wildland/structural firefighting equipment.

Ability to:

  • Demonstrate the proper utilization of equipment and materials.
  • Assist students and instructors in classroom, lab, and field environments.
  • Maintain accurate inventory and training records.
  • Maintain knowledge, skills, and abilities related to firefighting procedures and equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on fire service equipment.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and external partners.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Transport supplies and equipment from the college to training sites.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions with attention to detail.

Physical Effort:

  • Lifting and carrying heavy equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.
  • Bending and reaching.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment.
  • Working outdoors and in field environments, including heat, smoke, and uneven terrain.

Working Conditions:

  • Classroom, lab, and field training environments.
  • Exposure to heat, smoke, fumes, and hazardous materials.
  • Working with machinery and equipment with moving parts.
  • Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
  • Moderate noise level.
  • Travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, and/or events.
