Summary
A Certified Welder is knowledgeable on how to use all welding equipment and is proficient in general assembly applications. Welders are responsible for bracket installation and structural processes, cut and join metals, and operate equipment to assemble structures with precision. They provide the foundation for strong infrastructure, must follow safety precautions, and should have steady hands and great attention to detail.
Knowledge of different metals and their properties is essential.
- Welds each stage of bus manufacturing or repair according to processes
- Must be able to weld aluminum, metal, and stainless steel
- Must be able to drill, grind, sand, fabricate parts, disassemble, and reassemble related to welding and general repairs
- Must be able to read blueprints and engineering change notices and follow instructions to complete plans and repairs
- Uses measuring tape, levels, squares for installations based on engineering documentation (metric preferred)
- Use of standard hand tools where applicable
- Use of power tools such as electric and pneumatic tools where applicable
- Use of calibration tools
- Drilling and handling of materials such as fiberglass, plastics composites, mild steel, and aluminum
- Installation and removal of fasteners such as nuts, bolts, and rivets
- Occasionally apply adhesives and sealants to bus processes
- Install and repair bus processes and use mechanical equipment to operational standards
- Application of (MIG) welding techniques (preferred)
- Proper use of electrical and gas functions on welding machine (preferred)
- Cutting equipment such as plasma and acetylene cutter are occasionally used (preferred)
- Synthesizes complex or diverse information
- Demonstrates required skills

- Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness
- Proper use of PPE and observes safety and security procedures
- Other duties as assigned

Required Education, Certificates and ExperienceAssociate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or one to three years of related experience and/or training.
Work EnvironmentThe noise level is usually loud. Regularly required to work near moving mechanical parts, occasionally in high precarious places and offsite locations.
Physical RequirementsRegularly required to sit; use hands to handle and feel, talk or hear. Frequently required to reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
