Job Objective
A Registered Nurse is responsible for the nursing care of patients as established by the Nursing Practice Act of the Board of Registered Nursing of the State of California and as guided by policies and procedures of the Medical Center.
Emergency Department Job ObjectiveAn Emergency Department Registered Nurse must be knowledgeable in multiple disciplines, pediatrics, obstetrics, medicine, cardiology, trauma, orthopedics, oncology, infectious disease, and psychiatry. He/she must be knowledgeable in caring for all age groups, newborns, infants, toddlers, childhood, adolescence, adult and geriatric.
Duties and Responsibilities- Apply nursing process in direct patient care.
- Provide accurate assessment and documentation of physiological, psychosocial, cultural, developmental, socioeconomic, and spiritual needs of patients as evidenced by assessment within appropriate time frames.
- Provide logical sequence of action and update nursing care plan with evaluations each shift.
- Provide information and direct education process for patient/family.
- Provide discharge planning beginning on admission with appropriate referrals.
- Adhere to admission and transfer criteria.
- Adhere to all current policies and procedures in providing patient care and seek clarification if needed.
- Evaluate and document outcomes of medical, nursing, and ancillary team interventions.
- Incorporate time‑management skills in accomplishing care.
- Knowledgeable regarding current nursing practices and procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge and use of resources and forms.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Medical Center structure and administrative resources.
- Interpret rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of legal aspects of nursing care.
- Knowledge of legal documents pertinent to unit/area of care.
- Knowledge of patient rights.
- Act as liaison between medical staff and patient care team.
- Able to operate technical equipment in area of care safely, efficiently, and accurately.
- Assist in maintenance of a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment.
- Assess safety/cleanliness of patient/unit environment and report conditions requiring change.
- Utilize resources, equipment, and supplies efficiently and with cost awareness.
- Report hazardous conditions to appropriate department for correction.
- Use clean and aseptic techniques for protection of patients and personal safety.
- Prevent contamination and transfer of infection by using Exposure Control Plan and Standard Precautions.
- Demonstrate knowledge of emergency codes.
- Supervise care provided by others.
- Assume responsibility for quality of care given.
- Give accurate and concise patient care reports to appropriate persons.
- Demonstrate knowledge of scheduling guidelines.
- Maintain professional attitude and effective working relationships with fellow staff members, other departments, patients’ families, medical staff and volunteers.
- Function appropriately and effectively under pressure. Provide care as part of team effort in crisis or emergency situation.
- Adhere to all privacy laws when dealing with confidential and protected health information (PHI).
- Maintain confidentiality of patients, Medical Center, and department information.
- Adhere to the Code of Conduct.
- Adhere to all Antelope Valley Medical Center Compliance & Integrity Program policies and procedures, including duty to report violations and disclose conflicts of interest.
- Complete all mandatory initial and annual training within assigned time frames per established guidelines.
- Demonstrate ethical decision making, integrity, and willingness to promote a culture of safety.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, visitors, and physicians.
- Responsible for problem solving and crisis intervention related to physicians, patients, families, and staff.
- Follow the Chain of Command and Conflict Management process established by AVMC.
- Display willingness to follow directions and accept and utilize constructive criticism.
- Demonstrate knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific and cultural groups.
- Participate in age specific and cultural educational and training programs.
- Participate in unit or hospital‑based committees.
