Job Objective
In addition to the objectives outlined in the AVMC Registered Nurse (RN) job description, and under the direction of Director or designees, the Lactation Consultant/Educator promotes and supports breastfeeding during the first few days of life and continues to support the breastfeeding mother on an outpatient basis as needed. The Lactation Consultant/Educator assesses the educational needs of the staff and designs and implements educational workshops regarding lactation and breastfeeding.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Meets all the essential duties and responsibilities of the Registered Nurse (RN).
- Review and revise policies and procedures related to infant feeding (breast or formula fed).
- Conduct bedside lactation rounds and consult with mothers having breastfeeding problems, including those referred from other departments such as Pediatrics, NICU, Antepartum, Emergency Department, ICU, etc.
- Provide outpatient assistance for lactating mothers, including responding to phone calls, consulting outpatient requests, and follow‑up phone calls to breastfeeding mothers as needed; assist and supervise non‑IBCLC lactation specialists during outpatient consults.
- Assist in education and training of nursing and medical staff on lactation and breastfeeding through group discussions, case studies, in‑services, classroom sessions, and skills days.
- Refer mothers to Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program when eligibility has been determined and to other community resources as appropriate.
- Assist mothers with breast pump rentals, breastfeeding supplies, and purchase of pumping equipment/breastfeeding supplies within the Lactation Center.
- Teach classes for expectant and new breastfeeding mothers as needed.
- Participate in quality assurance programs to monitor the caliber of the hospital’s lactation program.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Possesses all the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities of the Registered Nurse (RN).
- Knowledge of mandated reporting laws.
- Knowledge of infant and child safety measures and abduction prevention program.
- Knowledge of Baby‑Friendly USA, Inc., Guidelines and Evaluation Criteria for Facilities Seeking Baby‑Friendly Designation.
- Graduate from a school of nursing (required).
- Successful completion of a recognized Lactation Education Program or IBCLC (required).
- BSN or MSN preferred.
- One (1) year clinical nursing experience in Maternal/Child Health in an acute care hospital (required); two (2) years preferred.
- Current California Registered Nursing license.
- BCLS Certification.
- Proof of completion of Lactation Education program or IBCLC certification; certified as a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) within one year of hire.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification required within 6 months from date of hire.
- Work often performed under stressful, emotional, and physical conditions.
- Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, twisting and reaching; must be able to speak, see, and hear.
- Ability to frequently lift, push and pull up to 25 lbs.
- Must be able to operate technical equipment in Women, Infant, and Pediatric areas safely and in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
