Brief Description / Job Objective

The Education Specialist is a specialized nursing practice that facilitates the professional development of nursing staff and other nursing team members. They are responsible for program coordination, skills and knowledge assessment, implementation of evidence-based practice, and coordination of quality improvement initiatives. The role aligns with the American Nurses Association (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development.

Major Functions
  • Integrates advanced clinical concepts and knowledge relevant to leadership, teaching, consultation and research to improve staff orientation, retention, patient care and nursing practice.
  • Serves as a clinical consultant and liaison to hospital supervisors, patient care associates, families, community members and schools of nursing.
  • Provides direct patient care as necessary for educational purposes and in emergency situations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collects data related to educational needs and other pertinent situations, defining potential issues and needs.
  • Uses analytical models and assessment tools to facilitate problem solving.
  • Applies current technologies for comprehensive assessment of individual and organizational needs.
  • Prioritizes teaching skills and knowledge development needs, working with unit leaders to implement a coordinated development plan.
  • Evaluates learning needs of nursing staff based on changes in processes, workflow, equipment, and hospital policy using evidence‑based practice.
  • Utilizes appropriate metrics to demonstrate improvement in patient care via clinical indicators, statistical data, core measures, risk management data, patient and staff surveys, and peer‑reviewed resources.
  • Implements strategies and techniques to achieve positive learning and practice environments.
  • Improves staff skills and knowledge through a collaborative education model.
  • Enhances staff job satisfaction and retention through mentoring programs, clinical preceptorship and efficient teaching modalities.
  • Participates in teaching and training of nursing staff, maintaining and enhancing staff skills across the institution.
  • Incorporates high‑reliability concepts into skills and knowledge development and promotes patient safety and evidence‑based practice.
  • Collaboratively evaluates and modifies staff skills and knowledge assessment practices.
  • Integrates teaching, consultation, leadership and research to influence plans and effect change.
  • Provides consultation recommendations and involves relevant stakeholders in planned changes.
  • Establishes consultative relationships to enhance professional development and mentorship.
  • Develops and implements recommendations and strategies for complex problems.
  • Selects and implements valid and reliable instruments and metrics to measure processes and outcomes.
  • Revises program and teaching methods based on data evaluation and disseminates results to supervisors.
  • Develops and maintains personal competencies to support electronic health records, documentation systems, and other patient care technologies.
  • Participates in advanced training to become a subject‑matter expert in clinical documentation systems.
  • Engages in planning prior to workflow or process changes.
  • Provides new‑hire, orientation, renewal, and enhancement training related to systems, forms, and downtime procedures.
  • Periodically reviews and re‑instructs staff in documentation standards specific to their units.

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge
  • Appreciation of mathematical concepts and their application to practical situations.
  • Understanding of California Nurse Practice Act, Scope and Standards of Practice, and Code of Ethics in alignment with hospital policy.
  • Knowledge of the Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development.
  • Familiarity with Nursing Sensitive Indicators and special needs of age‑specific groups.
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory aspects of care and relevant legal documents.
