job objective: vascular access coordinators are responsible for providing access to a patient’s circulatory system through various vascular access devices (vads), including peripheral ivs (pivs), midlines, ultrasound guided iv insertion and peripherally inserted central catheters (piccs).the vascular access coordinator is an expert in assessing a patient’s vein structure to determine the most appropriate type of access device for iv therapy. The vascular access coordinator plays a crucial role in patient care by providing reliable access for medications, blood products, nutrition and other iv treatments, which are essential for the patient’s treatment and recovery.

  :
• applies nursing process in direct patient care:
• provides accurate assessment and documentation within the time frame appropriate for level of care
• provides information to patient/family relating to vascular access and steps that will be considered by the vascular access coordinator
• adheres to all current policies and procedures in providing patient care and seeking clarification if needed
• coordinates with the multidisciplinary team to promote awareness of barriers to care and to identify mechanisms to overcome those barriers
• incorporates time management skills in accomplishing patient care
• nursing care delivery process

• knowledge of legal aspects of nursing care, in particular guiding vascular access

• vascular access responsibilities
  :
• is the expert to identify the correct vascular access device to use given the patient vein structure and medical history
• expert in completing vascular access with minimal iv needle sticks for a positive patient experience
• ensures the sterility and functionality of the access site
• monitors for signs of infection or complications
• trouble shoots any issues that arise from the vascular access and assesses next steps
• supervises others in vascular access procedures and troubleshooting
• is competent in adult vascular access with a goal to also become competent in the pediatric population to assist on the pediatric unit and/or picu
• education
  :
• educates patients and healthcare staff on proper care and maintenance, and troubleshooting any issues related to vascular access devices
• provides insertion and maintenance education to rn/lvn performing iv insertions at avmc
• evaluates the competency of rn/lvn performing iv insertions and offers guidance and/or education
• data collection
  :
• completes vascular access data and provides quality data upon request for the review of productivity, quality/risk issues and findings
• copying, faxing, and filing

• has a high knowledge level for identifying vascular access and possesses skill with minimal failures for both the adult and pediatric population
• is knowledgeable in vein structure and best veins to utilize for vascular access and which vascular access device to use
• knowledgeable in the core areas of infusion nursing and exposed to the newest advances in technology and practices within the infusion nursing specialty
