Position: Employment Coordinator and Job Developer for Mental Health Services

Mental Health America of Los Angeles (MHALA) is a leading nonprofit mental health agency serving over 19,000 low‑income individuals annually through integrated services in health, housing, employment, and wellness.

Employment Coordinator

35 hours per week / $24.00 per hour (actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law).

Summary

Assist adults with mental illness in improving employment functioning, identify interests and skills, and facilitate a community‑based employment plan following the psychosocial rehabilitation model.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide employment services including adult work experience, work adjustment, employment preparation, job development, placement, and retention services.
  • Provide collateral support, contacting family/others with authorization to assist with employment goal.
  • Determine member employment needs and barriers (social, functional, financial, educational/vocational).
  • Identify and present resources available to meet those needs.
  • Work collaboratively with DMH, DOR, and community partners to help members meet employment goals.
  • Participate in mental health or related trainings.
  • Attend staff, community meetings, and other day‑to‑day operations.
  • Cooperate with staff to ensure smooth delivery of services.
  • Complete program documentation standards per MHALA, county contracted provider, and funding source requirements, including 24‑hour turnaround documentation.
  • Participate in Program Audits and CARF Surveys.
  • Engage in duties directed by program management.
  • Provide support by maintaining the IPS program; collaborate with FSP team and members on employment/education goals.
  • Submit job applications and resumes.
  • Follow up on job applications by visiting businesses to satisfy contract obligations.
  • Visit community colleges to learn available programs and collaborate with Education Department.
  • Interview professionals in various fields to learn job details.
  • Observe different occupations.
  • Attend FSP program team meetings to review mutual member care plans and outcomes per contract obligation.
  • Maintain billing goal of 60 hours per month and other deliverables per IPS model.

Position Requirements
  • Current Class C driver’s license, vehicle, valid insurance, and ability to be insured under MHALA liability insurance.
  • Good basic English writing skills, computer skills, organization, and communication.
  • Flexibility and multitasking ability without losing productivity.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • High tolerance and understanding of a busy, unstructured work environment and clients with urgent, multiple needs.
  • Flexible work schedule.
  • TB clearance and re‑testing annually.
  • Ability to maintain empathy for individuals in severe need and creatively navigate barriers.
  • CPR certification.
  • MHALA no longer requires COVID‑19 vaccinations or boosters; may become required in future.
  • Employment verification from three past employers within the last 7‑year period.
