Environmental Health Specialist
Under the general supervision of the Environmental Health Director, or a Program Manager, the Environmental Health Specialist promotes individual and population public health by providing the essential services of public health within a variety of settings. Candidates must be a Registered Environmental Health Specialist, Registered Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training or Registered Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training eligible.
Responsibilities include:
- Monitoring environmental and health status to identify and solve community environmental public health problems
- Diagnosing and investigating environmental public health problems and health hazards in the community. Collecting samples, conducting field tests, collecting and analyzing environmental public health data; interpreting results and making recommendations for corrective action(s)
- Collaborating in Fairfield County Health Department's community health assessment and health improvement planning and intervention activities as needed
- Determining compliance with and enforcing environmental health laws and rules for environmental programs
- Mobilizing community partnerships and actions to identify and solve environmental health problems. Coordinating environmental public health activities and enforcement with professionals and investigators from other agencies and jurisdictions
- Enforcing laws and regulations that protect environmental public health and ensure safety
- Conducting routine/required inspections and/or audits to ensure compliance of existing local and state public health and environmental codes, regulations and policies
- Collecting water samples for laboratory analysis to ensure compliance of existing local and state public health and environmental codes, regulations and policies
- Investigating complaints regarding environmental health problems and environmental health hazards and initiating enforcement or corrective actions as required
- Participating in response teams to prevent, minimize, and contain adverse health events and conditions resulting from communicable diseases; food-, water-, and vector-borne outbreaks; chronic diseases; environmental hazards; injuries; and health disparities
- Writing detailed inspection reports and developing policies and plans that support individual and community environmental public health efforts
- Performing other duties as assigned consistent with job classification
Requirements:
- A Registered Environmental Health Specialist, Registered Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training or Registered Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training eligible
- Valid Ohio Driver's License
- Knowledge of environmental health principles and practices
- Knowledge of agency policies and procedures (may be developed after employment). Knowledge of state and local environmental health laws and regulations
- Ability to read, comprehend and apply technical material
- Excellent communication skills
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance
- Ability to plan, organize and implement programs and projects
- Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development by pursuing education, participating in professional committees and work groups
- Remains informed of current developments and procedures pertinent to duties; may be required to attend seminars/training
Some evening and weekend hours required. May be required to obtain other certifications and licensures. Ex:
Licensed Pesticide Applicator, Certified Pool Operator, Level 2 Food Safety Certification
