Position Overview
The primary purpose of the Intake Caseworker (Social Services Worker
3) position is to investigate claims of abuse and neglect of children. It also includes preparing child cases for court, meeting procedural deadlines governed by the State of Ohio, and ensuring documentation is complete and could serve as an on‑call social service worker (e.g., on weekends, holidays, after business hours). The role is high risk, high demand and requires flexibility due to unpredictable daily tasks.
45% Provides services to families by maintaining a caseload of abuse, neglect, and dependency cases; conducts interviews with adults and children at various locations; completes assessments in the Statewide Automated Child Welfare Information System (SACWIS); gathers evidence; works with community partners and/or collateral sources; provides interventions to alleviate crises and reduce risks; identifies family strengths and needs; develops family case plans;
determines alternative treatment plans; provides crisis intervention case management for out‑of‑home caregivers; attends or testifies at court hearings; participates in administrative case reviews; performs planned and unplanned emergency removals and placements; supervises visits with parents; transports children/adults; handles difficult and emergency cases during and after work hours; makes referrals within Protective Services or to community partners; required travel throughout Ohio and occasionally throughout the United States.
30% Maintains case record documentation in SACWIS and the Electronic Data Management System (EDMS) (e.g., photos, audio/video recordings, activity logs, forms, written summaries, assessments, social history, court documents) for supervisory approvals and agency record retention.
15% Assesses need for placement of children in substitute care when needed and secures out‑of‑home care placement that best meets children’s individual needs in the least restrictive and most appropriate setting.
10% Participates in ongoing training, supervisory/staff meetings, staff consultations and other management support tasks. Participates in weekend and after‑hours on‑call coverage on a rotating basis; assists with overflow case assignments; performs other duties as assigned.
Per Section of the Ohio Revised Code, a caseworker shall complete at least ninety hours of in‑service training during the first year of continuous employment, followed by thirty‑six hours annually thereafter. The applicant must also have a valid driver’s license.
