Qualifications
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with student and passenger endorsement.
  • Successfully passes an annual medical examination as prescribed by law.
  • Appropriate BCI/FBI clearance.
  • Good moral character.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Upholds board policies and follows administrative guidelines and procedures. Promotes a professional image of the district.
  • Reports any needs to the Mechanic or Transportation Coordinator, not to other personnel.
  • Performs daily pre‑trip and post‑trip bus inspections and submits completed forms to mechanics.
  • Consistently enforces student discipline procedures and guidelines from school/student handbooks.
  • Maintains a clean bus and sweeps out the bus daily; washes bus regularly when needed.
  • Is neat and clean; displays a positive attitude and accepts change.
  • Complies with bus routes as directed by the Transportation Coordinator and Superintendent.
  • Operates the vehicle safely over an assigned route, picking up and delivering only authorized students at assigned bus stops, and ensures that no one hurrying for the bus is left behind.
  • Obeys all traffic laws and transportation practices as outlined in the CDL manual, Bus Driver Handbook, School Board Policy and local ordinances.
  • Secures wheelchairs, car seats and other restraining devices on the bus as needed.
  • Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses and keeps all emergency exits clear of obstructions.
  • Prohibits all animals, fireworks, ammunition, explosives and other dangerous materials and objects from the bus.
  • Conducts emergency evacuation drills that comply with current state standards.
  • Completes student roster times schedule and other reports requested by superintendent or designee.
  • Maintains accurate route sheets for substitute use and completes any reports requested by superintendent or designee.
  • Attends one safety workshop annually and other required meetings.
  • Does a walk‑through after every route to check for sleeping students and seat conditions.
  • Schedules bus servicing according to mileage determined by Mechanic or Supervisor.
  • Abides by drug and alcohol policies, including notification of drug testing when required.
  • Is accessible to a telephone.
  • Maintains a file of permission slips for discharging students at stops other than the regular bus stop, as authorized by parents and approved by the principal.
  • Complies with all procedures and regulations established by the Board of Education.
  • Refrains from the use of obscene and/or foul language on the bus and at the bus barn.
  • Attends all meetings scheduled by the Transportation Coordinator.
  • Checks bus garage mailbox and extra‑trip postings daily.
  • Has the physical capability to lift and manage preschool and special needs children when necessary and to cope with stressful situations.
  • Reports all traffic violations and/or accidents for which the driver has been cited.
  • Refrains from becoming involved in matters that do not directly involve the driver.
  • Stops the bus, including activating stop lights, at each student pick‑up point unless the driver is sure the student will not board.
  • Accepts direction from a mechanic in the absence of the Transportation Coordinator.
Work Duties / Environment
  • Regular use of hands, fingers, and feet.
  • Swift movement, lifting, carrying, and moving work‑related supplies and equipment.
  • Regularly lifts and/or moves up to 10 pounds; frequently lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds; can evacuate passengers in an emergency.
  • Travels to work assignments.
  • Works under time constraints and deadlines.
  • Involves sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, seeing, reading, speaking, reaching, stretching, stooping, crouching, and kneeling.
  • Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, bodily fluids, blood, and communicable diseases.
  • Occasional interaction with aggressive, disruptive, or unruly individuals.
  • Rides on or drives buses and operates wheelchair lifts and secures car seats.
  • Works outside in inclement weather (occasionally).
  • Frequent exposure to loud noise levels; fumes or airborne particles; noxious odors; vibrations from driving a bus; and traffic.
  • Must be able to physically perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures.
