Deer Lakes School District-Recess​/Lunch Monitors

An ESS Cafeteria/Playground Monitor’s functions are to closely supervise and assist students during their lunch and recess periods. The primary goal is to facilitate a safe and positive environment for students to enjoy their recreation time.

• Meet students at the designated locations for indoor or outdoor recess.
• Closely supervise students at all times.
• Work from your designated station during recess and circulate the cafeteria to assist students during lunch – monitors should not congregate as a group.
• Place emphasis on allergy management, completing the meal, and positive interactions among students – student allergy and health concern information will be provided.
• Check daily for students that are not allowed recess or have restrictions for dietary or physical needs.
• Carry out outside recess procedures whenever weather conditions are dry and above 40 degrees; bring the students inside if the weather changes.
• Take the radio from the office before going outside to communicate any emergency situations.
• Follow our Revamped Recess initiative; help students understand what they can do in each rotation.
• Encourage appropriate behavior and interactions; refer students to the office when necessary and report any incidents to the student’s teacher via a note.
• Do not allow children to use any areas that are blocked off by cones or ropes; keep students away from muddy areas and equipment that is in need of repair.
• Escort students to the nurse or office in an emergency or injury situation that can’t be handled outdoors.
• Demonstrate cooperation and flexibility in performing other related duties as assigned by school administration and ESS.
• Understand and adhere to all ESS and school district policies and procedures.

• Minimum of high school diploma or GED.
• Pennsylvania State Police Clearance.
• Child Abuse Clearance.
• FBI Fingerprinting.
• School Health Form:
  Physical and Tuberculosis Test.
• Pennsylvania Department of Education Form 6004:
  Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification.
