Adult Basic Education Teacher, Correction Education - SCI Coal Township

Position Overview

The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking an Adult Basic Education Teacher, Correction Education to work at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) in Coal Township. The role involves teaching adult inmates in a secure, structured environment, strengthening academic skills, and supporting educational advancement.

• Student Assessment:
  Conduct pretests, determine placement, and adapt curriculum materials to meet learner needs.
• Classroom Instruction:
  Teach multiple subjects, assign coursework, evaluate progress, and facilitate educational programs.
• Record Management:
  Maintain attendance, inventory, and payroll records and order classroom supplies and materials.
• Classroom Control:
  Monitor behavior, enforce rules, and take corrective action to maintain an effective learning environment.
• Curriculum Planning:
  Develop lesson plans, select teaching techniques, and determine appropriate classroom instruction levels.

• Full‑time employment, 37.5 hours per week.
• Work hours:
  
  7:55 AM – 3:55 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch break.
• Position eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
• Telework:
  Not available.
• Starting salary may be non‑negotiable in some cases.

• Four years of paraprofessional experience assisting educational staff in a classroom setting that includes or is supplemented by one year of classroom instruction, or possession of an active Instructional 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
• A bachelor’s degree in education which includes or is supplemented by successful completion of an institution‑approved teaching practicum.
• An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes or is supplemented by completion of an institution‑approved teaching practicum, one year of classroom instruction, or possession of an active Instructional 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

• Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA.
• Must meet the Pennsylvania residency requirement.
• Must be able to perform essential job functions.

• Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
