Instrument and Controls Technician

About the role

The Instrument & Controls Technician will be responsible for managing all phases of electrical and control equipment throughout the plant, including preventive, corrective, emergency, and warranty service. The role requires identifying, repairing, and documenting electrical equipment malfunctions, troubleshooting DCS systems, PLCs, VFDs, motor control circuits, transmitters, flow meters, level controls, and burner management systems. The technician will calibrate mechanical and electrical instrumentation, install and test new equipment in accordance with safety standards, conduct predictive analysis of electrical and instrumentation systems, and update the Preventive Maintenance system and work orders.

Willingness to perform other duties as assigned, be on‑call, and work a variety of shifts to meet plant needs is required.

• Operate and maintain the instrument and control test, calibration and repair areas and all assigned equipment and tools.
• Help redesign instrumentation, control, and electrical systems as required.
• Monitor burning processes as appropriate.
• Perform general work or other assignments necessary to ensure the safe, clean, and efficient operation of the facility.
• Perform other duties as required by the maintenance department.

• Five (5) years or more of hands‑on experience with electronic/electrical and pneumatic systems in an industrial environment.
• Experience in Energy from Waste or Power Plant environments is desired.
• High School Diploma or equivalent and/or formal technical training.
• Familiarity with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) is required.
• Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose instrumentation and controls, including pressure, flow, temperature, and other sensing instrumentation (primarily Rosemount).
• Proficiency in the use of multimeters and smart calibrators.
• Ability to read electrical prints and P&IDs.
• Experience troubleshooting OMRON PLC hardware and logic using OMRON software.
• Experience troubleshooting Allen Bradley PLC hardware and logic using Allen Bradley software (SLC 504).
• Ability to learn and fully utilize the user Operator Interface System “Citect” for graphic screen creation, ci‑code writing, and alarm/trend tagging.
• Ability to learn and troubleshoot Ethernet communication in the Plant Control System.
• Willingness to work a rotating shift schedule and overtime as needed, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Ability to walk, stand, sit, and climb.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to work from heights and in confined spaces.
• Qualify to wear a full‑face respirator.
• Ability to work consistently in various weather conditions.

Hourly rate: $40.19 per hour.
Pay Transparency:
This role is covered under a Labor Union / Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The pay rate and benefits will be in accordance with the CBA for the role.
