Probation Officers serve under the auspices of the York County Court of Common Pleas. They are responsible for supervising either juveniles or adult offenders to ensure compliance with conditions of probation and case planning. The officer must balance community safety, victim restoration, and offender rehabilitation. Officers are assigned to geographic regions within the county or specialized caseloads, such as sexual or domestic violence offenses, mental illness, trauma history, or treatment courts.
Traveling to off‑site locations and extensive documentation are inherent to the role.
Probation Officers complete extensive training, including defense tactics, risk assessment (ORAS), and are expected to function independently under court supervision. The role requires counseling, supervision, court reports, and collaboration with agencies. Officers must pass initial certification within specified time frames or the position becomes untenable.
