Job OverviewOur Woodmill Operator 3 - 1st Shift (Mon‑Fri, 6:00 am – 2:30 pm) works under supervision of a foreman encompassing the skills of Decksaw/Debarker, Turning Operator, Forklift, Ripsaw/Offbear, Dowler, and Yardman/Loader.
LocationOur woodmill is located in McClure, PA.
ResponsibilitiesDecksaw/Debarker
- Operate and maintain the debarker and decksaw. Maintain and replace deck saw chains.
- Record number of logs and volume of logs. Verify accuracy of saw setting and length of logs.
- Cut logs to length for the most efficient use of logs for dowel production.
- Start saw, position log against guide, slide log into feed rolls or align log on feed rolls.
- Record logs cut to determine when specified quantity has been debarked and cut to length.
- Replace saw blades, chains, and lubricate machinery.
Turning Operator
- Operate Moulder, Chucking Machine, and Finger Joint Machine.
- Quality inspection of handles while banding.
- Perform daily safety checks and maintenance on equipment.
Forklift
- Load and unload kilns. Move pallets of dowels from kiln piler to kiln staging area.
- Attach identity card to stacks of lumber and record number of stacks by species for supervisor.
- Quality control inspection of dowels while stacking. Band and check pallets for end cracks and proper identification.
- Place dowels and finished third‑party material in warehouse; move material in and out of third‑party area.
- Position full pallets of material to stretch‑wrap equipment. Attach film to pallet and stretch‑wrap material.
- Dumps hopper of waste wood and bands and removes slabs and edgings as required.
- Perform daily safety checks on equipment; clean and service equipment and change LP tanks as required.
- Load or unload planks, squares, and dowels from conveyors.
- Keep empty pallet area supplied with proper pallet lengths and sizes.
- Check pallets for correct recording and counts for regular sawmill production and third‑party.
Yardman/Loader
- Confere with sawmill personnel and plan and allocate use of materials‑handling equipment such as conveyors, cranes, front‑end loader, picker truck, tractors and trucks.
- Scale and pick‑up incoming wood deliveries, as required. Interact with loggers and delivery persons as required.
- Maintain rick system and organization of logs. Keep records of materials received and used.
- Inspect incoming materials and verify invoices. Inspect yard machines and yard equipment and perform needed maintenance and repair work.
- Adjust work procedures to meet production schedules.
- Maintain office records dealing with shipments and production records.
Ripsaw/Offbear
- Operate electrically powered machinery and perform saw blade changes and other machinery maintenance.
- Position plank from head saw and rips boards along grain or trim board’s edges to obtain best yield.
- Position and secure collars and turn saw shafts to adjust cutting. Check height of saws and verify accuracy of cuts.
- Loosen table stops and guides and position them to align and secure workpiece.
- Work closely with dowel machine operator to maintain best pace and quality.
Dowler
- Discard edgings created at ripsaw.
- Quality control on squares, scan and pull defects.
- Feed dowels correctly to prevent jams. Break jams as necessary.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to complete simple math, to include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Must be able to read and comprehend simple instructions. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions. Industrial lift truck certification.
