- Ensures fresh quality merchandise using proper handling techniques; helps control damages and minimize product losses.
- Assists the Produce Manager with day‑to‑day operations: merchandising, ad execution, associate engagement and customer service; performs Produce Manager duties in their absence.
- Develops and implements merchandising plans that meet financial goals; keeps abreast of weekly ads and specials to ensure correct pricing and production.
- Adheres to and enforces production log policies and maintains accurate inventory by tracking sales reports, orders, and supplies for period‑end inventory.
- Assists in scheduling and training associates, recognizes performance, delegates work, and maximizes departmental profits.
- Uses the Learning Management System for current and new associates.
- Manages inventory levels and reviews orders to meet customer demand.
- Maintains back‑room organization and product storage within company guidelines.
- Oversees shelf replenishment to ensure product availability, prioritizing weekly specials, seasonal and local items, and other high‑velocity items.
- Uses cutting lists for accuracy and variety of product.
- Checks and verifies department deliveries and invoices for accurate billing.
- Might help unload merchandise and transport to sales floor or storage area.
- Enforces department practices for receiving, dating, and restocking to ensure product rotation.
- Monitors product quality and freshness; breaks down deliveries.
- Controls department expenses by improving operations, controlling labor costs, and reducing losses due to damage, spoilage, or shrink.
- Ensures associates follow company recipes for prepared products and maintain freshness by removing and recording out‑of‑code items.
- Completes required product logs and maintains a well‑stocked, appealing produce department.
- Assists with special requests such as filling fruit baskets.
- Unpacks cartons and crates of merchandise, cleans and trims produce, stocks area with new merchandise, and ensures items are in saleable condition.
- Ensures proper pricing and signage, maintains salad bar and cut fruit/vegetable as needed, and assists in building attractive displays.
- Handles spoiled and damaged product, new items and discontinued items per company policy.
- Maintains backroom and receiving area security and organization, follows cleaning schedules, and ensures work areas meet health and OSHA requirements.
- Disposes of trash properly and may assist with baling cardboard or other duties if trained.
- Ensures smooth operation of department and store by cooperating with co‑workers and superiors, and continuously improving job performance.
- Uses all provided Personal Protected Equipment (PPE) such as cut‑resistant gloves, safety cutters, and company‑sponsored footwear.
- Might assist in other departments if called upon.
- Assists the department manager in supervising all associates within the department, and may also oversee the Floral department in select stores.
- High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree in a business‑related or food‑service‑related field desirable.
- Minimum two years of experience in management within a retail, restaurant, or supermarket environment.
