The Summer Day Camp Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting campers and staff to and from scheduled field trips, swimming outings, recreational activities, and program locations. In addition to driving responsibilities, this position is expected to actively assist with camper supervision and engagement throughout the workday.
This role requires a strong commitment to safety, professionalism, and youth development. The ideal candidate is dependable, highly energetic, and comfortable interacting with children in a structured recreational environment.
- Safely operate a Lancaster County Parks & Recreation bus for summer camp field trips and activities.
- Maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and complete required documentation.
- Ensure all safety procedures are followed during the loading, transportation, and unloading of campers.
- Maintain accurate transportation logs and attendance records.
- Report vehicle maintenance issues, accidents, or incidents immediately to the Recreation Coordinator.
- Follow all traffic laws and department transportation policies.
- Assist with supervision of campers during daily activities and field trips.
- Help enforce camp rules, safety procedures, and behavior expectations.
- Interact positively with children throughout the work period.
- Support counselors during games, activities, and transitions.
- Assist with monitoring campers during snacks, lunch, and recreational periods.
- Provide basic first aid as needed and report incidents according to department policy.
- Serve as a positive role model for campers at all times.
- Strong knowledge of safe driving practices and defensive driving techniques.
- Ability to supervise and positively interact with children ages 5–11.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Professional demeanor and strong customer service skills.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements required.
- Clean driving record.
- Ability to pass background screening and pre-employment drug test.
- CPR/First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain prior to camp start date).
- Experience working with youth preferred.
- Must be available for the duration of the summer camp season.
- Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.
- Ability to assist campers entering and exiting the bus.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and actively assist during camp activities.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Seasonal summer position.
- Monday through Friday.
- Hours scheduled between 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM (based on camp needs and field trip schedule).
- Required participation in pre-camp training.
