Summary

The Industrial Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing contract logistics processes, driving continuous performance improvement, and providing engineering support for new and expanding business implementations. This role supports multifaceted operations, contributes to facility layout and design, determines appropriate equipment, and supports the physical implementation of solutions. The Engineer maintains financial and engineering metrics that meet or exceed performance goals and may provide guidance and training to interns and co‑ops.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Research/Analysis
    • Forecast facility, vehicle, staffing, and material handling equipment needs to improve cost, utilization, service, and efficiencies.
    • Study production costs, process flow charts, and schedules to determine the most efficient sequence of operations.
    • Recommend methods to maximize utilization of facilities and personnel through job restructuring, workflow reorganization, workstation relocation, and equipment purchasing in compliance with regulations.
    • Configure distribution system functionality to optimize performance (e.g., warehouse management, labor management, slotting, reporting applications).
    • Use work measurement techniques and analyze work samples to develop labor utilization standards.
    • Analyze contractual commitments, customer specifications, design changes, and other data to drive continuous improvement and meet or exceed customer expectations.
    • Conduct special research or technical studies critical to logistic support functions.
    • Perform cost/benefit trade‑off analysis and develop ROI business cases for recommended projects involving process, system, or technology change.
    • Provide labor planning tools tailored to the client’s business and agreed operating processes.
    • Identify and procure necessary capital expense items to support successful launch of operations.
    • Understand the Solutions Model tied to the client’s award of business to DSV.
    • Participate in “Advance Quality Planning” sessions with new clients to validate requirements and processes.
  • Design and Implementation
    • Determine and agree on final design of facility, operating process, equipment type and quantity.
    • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with key functional groups (HR, IT, Operations, etc.).
    • Provide action items to Project Management to ensure successful implementation.
  • Documentation/Reporting
    • Document and communicate common processes for all distribution functions within scope.
    • Summarize data to address gaps in operation and identify improvement areas.
  • Communication
    • Communicate opportunities for improvement in the distribution network.
    • Help determine key metrics and provide recommendations to guide management.
    • Assist with developing and presenting training materials and classes for distribution processes.
  • Relationships
    • Bring cross‑functional teams together to collaborate on projects.
    • Support the labor management program, including engineered labor standards, incentive programs, and program policies.
    • Ensure alignment among all operations’ policies, procedures, and ongoing improvement projects.
  • LEAN Operations
    • Facilitate LEAN methodology and recommend solutions to specific business case issues.
    • Utilize statistical tools such as Pareto charts, histograms, cause‑and‑effect diagrams.
    • Maintain expertise in Six Sigma DMAIC, value‑stream mapping, and 5S.
    • Work with leadership to drive continual improvement programs, Kaizen events, and workshops.
    • Integrate sustainability components and enforce adherence through audits, dashboards, and scorecards.
    • Document improvement successes in case studies before and after format that quantifies value.
  • Project Management
    • Assist with developing and rolling out growth strategies and projects.
    • Use project management tools to track actions and lead/ support meetings through completion.
    • Determine feasibility of projects factoring costs, space, schedule limitations, company goals, technical requirements, and economic factors.
