Responsibilities and duties for safe and efficient transport and delivery of freight by operating tractor-trailer combinations, including hooking and unhooking trailers, loading and unloading, fueling, and maintaining safety and compliance with regulations.
Duties And Responsibilities- Safe and efficient transport and delivery of freight by operating (driving) tractor-trailer combinations
- Hook and unhook trailers from the tractor or converter dollies, including pushing/pulling dollies and cranking landing gear on semi-trailers and/or the front support of converter dollies
- Load and unload trailers, with or without mechanical freight-handling equipment
- Perform fueling tasks
- Perform lifting, pulling, pushing and carrying of freight
- Inspect tractor, trailer and equipment for defects and safe operating condition before and after trips; submit conditions through the automatic onboard recording device (AOBRD) as applicable
- Check shipping papers to determine the nature of load and how cargo is loaded
- Check whether additional blocking or load locks are required
- Install and remove tire chains as required by weather conditions
- Drive to destination in accordance with Federal and State regulations; typically up to 10 hours interstate and 12 hours intrastate (California), followed by an off-duty period of at least 8 consecutive hours
- Apply knowledge of commercial driving and skill in maneuvering vehicle in difficult situations (heavy traffic, inclement weather, tight loading dock areas)
- Ensure that all shipping documentation is available for inspection and accompanies shipments; maintain signed bills of lading for proof of delivery and submit to dispatch
- Maintain records required for compliance with State and Federal regulations (driver’s logs, fuel purchases, mileage, and other records)
- Perform duties in accordance with company policies and procedures and comply with applicable regulations for safe operation of a commercial motor vehicle
- Report accidents involving driver or company equipment
- Report highway safety hazards noted in route to dispatch
- Promptly report delays due to breakdown, weather or traffic or other emergencies
- Report delays in loading/unloading or irregularities in pickup or delivery of cargo
- Punctuality and regular attendance are mandatory

- Proper handling and accurate completion of paperwork related to truck operations and freight movements

- Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License
- Must have tractor-trailer driving experience with 48’ to 57’ dry vans or 42’ tanks for training eligibility
- Ability to read and write in English and perform simple calculations; operate electronic logging devises and/or automatic onboard recording devices
- Working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems
- Knowledge of DOT and State regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection and maintenance, and hazardous materials transportation
- Around-the-clock availability for freight movements and ability to be away from home for extended periods if dispatched for line driving
- Must meet and maintain the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation
- Must satisfactorily pass a drug test and be subject to random alcohol and drug testing
- Ability to sit and remain alert while driving for up to 11 hours interstate and 16 hours intrastate
- Ability to shift a manual transmission and operate foot pedals
- Ability to perform occasional squatting, crouching, bending, and climbing; enter/exit the vehicle 8–10 times per day
- Ability to install and remove tire chains, and to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and move freight with or without mechanical aids
- Ability to routinely reach for freight at various heights and maneuver controls for operation of vehicle
- Ability to work outdoors up to 10–30% of time and tolerate irregular schedules, temperature extremes, and long trips
- Typical working conditions: 30%–90% spent inside truck; exposure to noise, vibration, fumes from fueling
