Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, develop, and manage a team of hourly Safety Specialists by establishing performance expectations, providing ongoing feedback, and supporting employee development.
- Establish departmental priorities, assign workloads, and monitor performance to ensure timely execution of safety and compliance initiatives.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve departmental policies, procedures, and standard operating practices.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
- Serve as the primary DOT safety subject matter expert for Operations leadership and cross‑functional business partners.
- Support after‑hours accident response and other safety‑related matters as business needs require.
- Lead the DOT safety and regulatory compliance program for the U.S. Road Transport division, ensuring compliance with all applicable FMCSA regulations and company policies.
- Oversee compliance related to Driver Qualification Files, Hours of Service, Drug and Alcohol Testing, Vehicle Maintenance, accident reporting, CSA performance, and other DOT regulatory requirements.
- Ensure drivers meet all federal qualification requirements by overseeing Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs), PSP reports, Medical Examiner Certificates, CDL status, Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements, and annual qualification reviews.
- Monitor regulatory changes and implement updates to policies, procedures, and compliance programs.
- Support DOT investigations, compliance reviews, regulatory audits, and roadside inspections while ensuring timely completion of corrective actions.
- Monitor driver safety performance through Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), onboard camera systems, telematics, CSA data, and other safety technologies to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
- Partner with Driver Leaders and Human Resources to review safety events, provide coaching recommendations, and recommend appropriate corrective actions to address unsafe behaviors, regulatory violations, and opportunities for performance improvement.
- Collaborate with Operations leadership to reduce recurring violations, improve driver safety performance, and promote safe operating practices.
- Support accident prevention initiatives, driver recognition programs, and company‑wide safety campaigns.
- Lead investigations involving DOT‑recordable accidents, serious incidents, and other safety‑related events. Conduct root cause analyses, determine accident preventability, and develop recommendations that reduce future incidents.
- Monitor accident trends and recommend initiatives that improve fleet safety and reduce organizational risk.
- Oversee DOT safety orientation and regulatory compliance training for newly hired drivers. Develop and facilitate ongoing safety education, regulatory updates, and company‑wide safety initiatives.
- Conduct internal DOT compliance audits, location safety reviews, and operational assessments to ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and monitor safety scorecards, compliance reports, dashboards, and key performance indicators (KPIs) related to safety to evaluate organizational performance.
- Analyze safety and compliance data to identify trends and recommend process improvements that strengthen safety performance and operational effectiveness.
- Lead or participate in cross‑functional projects that support safety, compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Perform other duties, projects, and responsibilities assigned to support departmental and organizational objectives.
- Bachelor's degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Transportation, Business Administration, or a related field preferred; equivalent transportation or DOT safety experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Minimum five (5) years of progressive DOT safety, transportation safety, or regulatory compliance experience.
- Minimum three (3) years of leadership experience managing employees or safety teams.
- Strong working knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSA) and DOT compliance requirements.
- Experience managing Driver Qualification programs, DOT compliance initiatives, regulatory audits, and accident investigations.
- Demonstrated experience implementing process improvements and leading cross‑functional initiatives.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to travel as business needs require.
- Experience supporting multi‑site transportation operations or a geographically dispersed driver workforce (preferred).
- Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL‑A) (preferred).
- Certified Director of Safety (CDS) (preferred).
- Certified Safety Supervisor (CSS) (preferred).
