Position: ESL Teacher - Anticipated Opening (2026-2027)

ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or above from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Alabama teacher certification in ESOL
  • Ability to travel between schools, as needed

Reports To:

Principal(s), EL Coordinator

Supervises:

Students and staff members designated by the Board, Superintendent, Principal, or EL Coordinator

Job Goal:

To ensure that all English Learners (ELs) have equitable access to a high-quality education, a learning environment conducive to increasing English language proficiency, and support in working toward mastery of content-area standards.

Performance Responsibilities and

Essential Functions:

  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Implements any specialized learning plans, accommodations, or modifications for students as required.
  • Assesses student progress on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Assists the EL Coordinator with the creation and implementation of Individualized English Language Plans (I-ELPs) for EL students.
  • Designs curricular units to effectively advance English language acquisition in pull-out sessions.
  • Collaborates with regular classroom teachers to design and carry out interventions, accommodations, and learning supports for EL students at all district schools.
  • Consults with regular classroom teachers on student progress.
  • Provides in-service training for faculties on selected EL topics.
  • Secures certification for and administers language proficiency screeners and the ACCESS 2.0 annual assessment, as directed by the EL Coordinator.
  • Screens incoming students for English language proficiency.
  • Participates in MTSS meetings and parent conferences as needed.
  • Maintains timely records on EL students, including but not limited to plans, documentation of services, and monitoring forms.
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Assists with translation needs if bilingual. Schedules and secures translators as directed by EL Coordinator.
  • Provides support and resource information to EL instructional assistant(s) and classroom teachers.
  • Assists EL Coordinator with inventory, distribution, and retrieval of any EL materials.
  • Attends workshops, faculty meetings, and other events at assigned school.
  • Travels to other district schools as needed to provide services to students and/or collaborate with faculty members.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Dresses and conducts self in a professional manner.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Works with colleagues to enhance school climate and overall academic program.

    Terms:

    Nine months unless otherwise determined by the board. Salary and work year to be established by the board.

    Evaluation:

    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel and in accordance with State requirements.
