Overview
The nursing graduate shall practice only under the direct supervision of a registered nurse who is physically present on the unit to: (1) cosign medication transcription, medication administration, and nursing documentation; and (2) continually observe, assist, coordinate, evaluate, and monitor the nursing graduate. The nursing graduate shall use the initials NG after the nursing graduate’s name as credentials.
ResponsibilitiesTranscribe medication orders per written policies and procedures once skill validation has been successfully completed.
Administer medications and controlled substances and sign controlled substances sheets.
Document in the medical record with the abbreviation NG.
Perform patient assessments after the initial assessment or after the first assessment of the shift performed by the registered nurse.
Perform and document routine procedures taught within the nursing graduate’s generic nursing program, including placing nasal gastric tubes, performing urinary catheterizations, applying sterile dressings, performing blood sugar checks, and obtaining specimens.
Qualifications- Graduate of an accredited registered nursing program.
- A nursing graduate is eligible to sit for NCLEX. The nursing graduate shall cease practice immediately if they fail two attempts at the NCLEX exam or have not successfully taken and passed the NCLEX exam within 120 days of their application to the Board of Nursing.
Conditions for ceasing practice:
- No later than 120 days after the date the nursing graduate submitted an application to the Board.
- Immediately if the nursing graduate fails the second NCLEX examination.
- Work without the physical presence and direct supervision by a registered nurse is prohibited.
- Referral to oneself or practice as a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) is prohibited.
- Being considered a staff person for staffing pattern purposes is prohibited.
- Accepting charge responsibilities is prohibited.
- Performing initial patient assessment or the first patient assessment of a shift, developing patient plans of care, evaluating or documenting patient discharge, or independently administering medications or intravenous therapy is prohibited.
