About The PositionThe Office of Central Services (OCS) is seeking a qualified applicant to fill an Equipment Mechanic III position, grade A-17, within its Fleet Management Division. This senior-level position involves skilled mechanical work in equipment maintenance, repair, and service of light to medium‑sized motor vehicles and equipment such as automobiles, vans, trucks, and buses. The selected individual will tow, troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, maintain, rebuild, or replace parts and components.
Work is performed independently under the general supervision of an Assistant Garage Supervisor and evaluated in accordance with departmental rules, policies, and procedures. This is an essential position.
The Office of Central Services is a multifaceted agency of the Prince George’s County Government that provides government‑wide, mission‑critical support services in facilities operations and management, building design & construction, real estate services, fleet management, and general services.
Examples of Work- Utilizes computer‑based diagnostic equipment, service and parts manuals, training, and experience in the analysis and correction of vehicle problems.
- Performs maintenance and repair on engines, computerized electronic ignition and fuel/emission systems, suspension and steering components in both front and rear wheel drive vehicles, air conditioning, heating and cooling systems, and brake systems, utilizing appropriate equipment.
- May supervise, lead, train or provide technical guidance to subordinates.
- Observes all administrative rules and regulations and practices proper county and industry safety procedures.
- Enters, edits, and completes work orders to assist in the collection of direct and indirect labor using the current computerized database.
- Diagnoses and performs minor road service repairs to preclude the need to tow vehicles in compliance with the Maryland Vehicle Law and Division policies.
- Performs other tasks and duties as assigned which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description but fall within the general occupational category a responsibility level typically associated with the incumbent class of work.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Three (3) years of experience/training in the mechanical field servicing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on a variety of light to medium‑sized motorized vehicles and equipment, with at least one (1) year at the full performance level.
- Possession of a valid driver's license with no more than six (6) points.
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications
- Master Certified Emissions Technician (MCET)
- Maryland State Inspector
- Possession of a valid driver's license with no more than six (6) points.
- Obtain and maintain a valid Department of Transportation Medical Certification Card.
- Submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration driving record that reflects a satisfactory driving history.
- Furnish and maintain tools in a serviceable condition.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting and carrying objects weighing 50 pounds or more; pulling, pushing, reaching, walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, repeated bending, and climbing; and safely operating trucks, tractors, and other motor vehicles and equipment.
- Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
- Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of assigned duties.
- Successfully pass pre‑employment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings.
