Heavy Equipment Mechanic At Total Civil Construction & Engineering, we don't just build roads and infrastructure—we build lasting impact. As we continue expanding across the Mid-Atlantic region, we're looking for a skilled and safety-focused Heavy Equipment Mechanic to keep our fleet running and support our field teams on active civil construction projects.

Job Summary

The heavy equipment mechanic diagnoses, repairs, and maintains a variety of contractor equipment used in construction activities. Equipment serviced may include – but is not limited to – dozers, excavators, loaders, rollers, rubber-tire equipment, and support vehicles. Work is performed both in the shop and in the field, and includes diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic faults, performing scheduled preventive maintenance, and repairing or replacing major components.

NOTE:

Must have a flexible schedule (may work irregular or odd hours in outdoor work sites, depending upon project needs or weather), including nights and weekends, and must be available to respond to urgent field service calls.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Diagnoses mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic faults using diagnostic software, multimeters, pressure gauges, and other test instruments.
  • Performs preventive maintenance in accordance with manufacturer intervals: fluid and filter changes, lubrication, sampling, and scheduled inspections.
  • Repairs or replaces major components including engines, transmissions, final drives, hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves, and undercarriage systems.
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and OEM service bulletins.
  • Performs on-site diagnostics and emergency repairs to return equipment to service and minimize downtime.
  • Operates equipment to test repairs and confirm proper function and safety before returning it to production.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate job site and company safety and security standards to prevent property damage and injuries, including lockout/tagout and safe lifting and blocking practices.
  • Reports parts needs and recurring failures to the supervisor.
  • Works with and assists crew and other mechanics as needed; coordinates with operators, foremen, and fleet management on equipment status.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic or field service technician.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic faults on heavy construction equipment.
  • Working basic knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of electrical and electronic systems, including sensors, wiring harnesses, and electronic control systems.
  • Computer literacy sufficient to use diagnostic software, telematics platforms, and digital service records. Familiarity with Caterpillar systems (Cat ET, SIS, Vision Link) or comparable OEM platforms preferred.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment for testing and verification purposes.
  • Strong adherence to OSHA construction standards and job site safety protocols.
  • Able to prioritize repairs to minimize equipment downtime, and to make sound decisions rapidly under pressure.
  • Able to communicate clearly with supervisors, operators, and fleet management.
  • Able to work independently with minimum supervision, and cooperatively with other mechanics and site personnel.
