Title: Substitute Special Education Assistant
Rate: $20.00/hr., starting September 11, 2024.
Summary: A substitute special education assistant assists the classroom teacher in providing extra support to students with special needs, promoting maximum academic and personal growth. The substitute’s responsibilities range from supplementing the general education curriculum to helping individual students.
Responsibilities:
- Assists the teacher in supplementing the general education curriculum and helps individual students, including reading and listening to students and reviewing their work.
- Provides instructional reinforcement for individual students or small groups of students on contents and skills introduced by the teacher.
- Assists teacher with classroom management and general supervision of the class.
- Assists with administrative duties such as setting up equipment and preparing materials.
- Assists students with preparing for and moving to other classrooms, school activities, outside activities, and arrival and departure from school.
- Assists students with clothing, grooming, health habits, and bathroom activities as needed.
- Aids students with the use of specialized equipment as needed.
- Assists with toileting students, changing diapers, and/or personal hygiene as needed.
- Attends to students’ physical, personal, academic, and emotional needs.
- Supports students with special needs by following provisions specified in their IEPs/504 Plans.
- Communicates to the teacher any unusual situations or needs of students.
- Protects the confidentiality of records and information gained while performing the duties and uses discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
- Performs other duties as directed by the classroom teacher and school administration.
Education Required:
- High School Diploma or GED

- PA State Police Clearance (Act 34)
Requisite Skills and Ability to:
- Follow oral and written directions in English.
- Communicate effectively in English.
- Establish effective working relationships with staff and students.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student, staff, and/or parent information.
