Job Description

This internship is a macro-level position that reviews policies and procedures that impact people statewide. The student will observe how a state‑level program is administered and use data to make decisions.

To ensure a successful internship experience, the student should have some experience providing services to vulnerable individuals (children or adults) who need assistance so that they can actively participate in discussions. Most meetings are completed by video conferencing; occasional in‑person meetings may be required to pick up materials or join in person. The Home Help team meets once a month in‑person at the office;

other office visits occur as needed. Most of the work is performed remotely.

An intern will meet weekly with the Home Help Program Manager to discuss progress on assigned projects. Projects are chosen based on the intern’s interests and desired learning outcomes. Meetings can be conducted through video conferencing, with some in‑person meetings in Lansing. The intern will attend staff meetings, internal group meetings with partners in the central office, and external group meetings with Home Help providers and adult services staff.

Typical projects include:

• Participating in agency provider meetings to share new information and address provider questions.
• Researching other states around specific policy items and sharing information with the team so decisions can be made.
• Actively participating in team discussions as new issues are addressed and strategies are developed.
• Completing data collection and analysis to assist in quality control measures.
• Creating PowerPoint presentations to share information at meetings.
• Creating surveys for providers, clients, and adult services staff to gather data for decision‑making.
• Developing training materials and job aids.
• Participating in discussions on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Enrollment in a master’s degree program in one of the following areas:
Social Work, Public Health, Business Administration, Communications, Public Administration, Social Innovation, Health Care Administration.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Experience with video conferencing platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to learn new technology quickly.
• Ability to manage time independently and complete projects promptly.
