Overview
The Economic, Development & Planning Department is seeking a Permits Clerk in the Building Safety Division. The position involves processing building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and demolition permits, and providing related administrative support.
Essential Functions- Serve as the permit clerk for the office and perform a wide range of related services concerning the issuance of building and trade permits.
- Process and manage permit applications for building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and demolition projects.
- Enter permit applications into the computer system, verify licenses, ensure applications are complete, collect fees, and maintain accurate records.
- Process paper and electronic building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, demolition, and sign applications, including notarizing homeowner permit applications.
- Manage a multi‑line phone system, respond to inquiries from homeowners, contractors, and tenants, and refer customers to appropriate Building Safety staff as needed.
- Assist inspectors, contractors, and homeowners with residential projects.
- Operate a cash register; collect payments at the front counter, including cash, checks, and credit card transactions; verify all fees prior to processing payments.
- High School Diploma or GED and at least six (6) months of training beyond high school.
- At least one (1) year of diversified office clerical experience, including customer service and use of word processing and spreadsheet software.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
- Cash handling experience required.
- Experience with BS&A preferred.
- Able to be bonded under the City's blanket bond; no prior dishonest acts.
- Must authorize release of criminal history information to the City.
