9-1-1 Temporary Employee

Under the supervision of the Director or his/her designee and in a 24-hour work environment, the 9-1-1 Temporary Employee:
- Receives emergency calls from the public in need of law enforcement, fire, medical or other emergency services.
- Determines the location and priority of the emergency and collaborates with other employees to align appropriate emergency units and resources.
- Answers non-emergency calls for assistance and processes criminal justice information.
- Operates a variety of communication/computer equipment.
- On limited occasion may be asked to monitor multiple public safety radio talk groups and assist with dispatching units while maintaining their location and status.
- Works up to 12 hour shifts and considers short notice staffing coverage when solicited.
- Will not exceed an average of 30 hours per week.
- Works as an integral member of a public safety team.
This position(s) is projected to be 12 months and may be extended with mutual agreement of Employee and Employer. 60 days' notice of intent to discontinue the position will be provided by Employer.
Essential FunctionsOther Functions:
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Must adhere to departmental standards in regard to HIPAA, and other matters of confidentiality and privacy.
- During a public health emergency, the employee may be requested to perform duties similar to, but not limited, to those in this job description.
- Ability to meet deadlines in a timely manner, change focus on projects as needed and multitask.
- Dependable and regular attendance required.
- Ability to handle stressful situations on a regular basis.
- Ability to maintain professionalism and composure during stressful situations.
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- College course work in Criminal Justice, Emergency Services, Public Safety or related field preferred.
Experience:
- Current or recent prior experience in a high-volume customer service center or emergency response dispatch experience is required.
- Requisite experience will be vetted case by case to ensure applicants' ability to assimilate to the environment and systems expeditiously.
- Applicants experienced with the systems, software, equipment, and jurisdictions within Ingham County Central Dispatch will be given preference.
- CPR, EMD or advanced first-aid training is preferred.
- General knowledge of local streets and traffic patterns is preferred.
Other Requirements:
- Must pass a data entry, alpha and numeric keyboarding test.
- Must be able to achieve and maintain LEIN processing status.
- Must pass criminal, credit and other background checks as required by the County.
- Fill in a minimum of 16 hours per month to provide relief for full time staff and/or maintain requisite skills and training, unless fewer monthly hours are approved by a supervisor.
- Willingness to be contacted for short notice shift coverage opportunity. No compelled "call back."
- Must maintain continuing education hours and performance standards as identified and scheduled with Management.
Demonstrates effective communication skills by engaging respectfully and effectively with individuals of all backgrounds and perspectives to promote clarity, understanding, and collaboration.

- This position works in an indoor environment. There is no planned exposure to prominent lights, noises, odors, temperatures or weather conditions.
- This position is exposed to individuals in crisis. These individuals may suffer from mental or emotional illness, have violent tendencies or be unconcerned with their personal safety and hygiene.
