Assistant Safety Manager Position Summary
WIELAND’s Assistant Safety Manager will be responsible for communicating the WIELAND Safety Plan to all employees, recommending, scheduling, and maintaining records of Safety Health and Environment (SH&E) employee training, and reporting on key performance indicators. The role works closely with the Safety Department, Pre‑Construction, Operations, Corporate Compliance, job site teams, trade partners and suppliers to identify and implement controls that reduce workplace injuries and illnesses.
JobFunctions
- Monitor and maintain all safety related trainings and certifications in WIELAND’s safety software or assign to a designated safety team member.
- Schedule and facilitate training sessions in cooperation with the Safety Director or other safety team members.
- Review, log, and summarize all incidents, insurance carrier, OSHA, MSHA and internal site visit reports in Excel.
- Recommend pro‑active approaches, using leading indicators and best preventative practices to mitigate workplace injuries for employees and subcontractors.
- Update third‑party software as required and assign when necessary.
- Perform research to identify necessary safety trainings and certifications.
- Lead safety meetings and develop agendas to ensure key safety initiatives are communicated.
- Provide ideas for continual improvement of the Safety System.
- Stay current on construction industry trends and OSHA standards to ensure compliance.
- Perform routine job site visits as requested by the Safety Director.
- Report safety findings to relevant departments.
- Convey the Safety Plan during onboarding and update current employees.
- Implement and maintain job site safety incentive programs and attend related meetings.
- Communicate promptly, accurately and thoroughly to foster trust with all departments and trade partners.
- Work with the Safety Director to build a high‑performance safety culture.
- Create a monthly Safety Broadcast addressing current safety content.
- Remain professional under pressure and respect diverse viewpoints.
- Maintain and display company values and culture.
- Travel flexibly as projects demand.
- 2–4 years of field construction experience.
- OSHA Construction 30‑hour certification (or ability to acquire).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical, organizational and time‑management skills.
- Proficiency with smartphones, tablets or PC in the field.
- STS‑C and CHST certifications through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (or ability to acquire).
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability and willingness to travel as needed.
