Under the leadership of the Economic Development & Planning Department, the Chief Building Inspector will supervise a team of Building Inspectors, ensuring compliance with building, grading, zoning, and safety laws, approved plans, specifications, and standards.
Responsibilities- Supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate Building Inspectors, providing direction and training.
- Enforce building and sign codes throughout the City.
- Oversee residential building permits and determine construction valuations to facilitate fee collections.
- Perform residential and commercial electronic plan review to ensure conformance to codes.
- Develop and maintain informational handouts, forms, and permit applications for the counter.
- Maintain records of all Building Permits and related documents in the Building Safety Division.
- Prepare and resolve complaints from contractors, owners, and the public.
- Coordinate activities between the Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing sections during joint inspections.
- Associate’s Degree or two (2) years of college in Business, Design, Architecture, Skilled Trade, or a related field.
- At least seven (7) years of general building construction/plan review experience, including three (3) years as a licensed Building Inspector.
- Valid State of Michigan Building Inspector & Plan Reviewer license retained throughout employment.
- Must obtain a B1 Residential or B2 Commercial Building Inspector Certification within the first year, followed by a B3 Building Plan Examiner Certification within two (2) years.
- Valid driver’s license.
- International Code Council Certification as a Building Inspector preferred.
