Job Summary:

Professional Writing Assistants work directly with students (both in-person and online) to assist with writing projects in all areas of the curriculum and at any stage in the writing process. Professional Writing Assistants provide individualized assistance to students one-on-one, in small group settings, and within classroom environments that is consistent with current methods in the disciplines of writing center studies and college composition.

Professional Writing Assistants also spend a portion of their work time staffing the front desk in the Writing Center and attending required meetings and trainings related to their work. They may be involved in projects related to the Writing Center, departmental, divisional or college wide committee work, hiring committees, peer mentoring with Peer Writing Assistants (student employees) or other Professional Writing Assistants, and/or a variety of additional professional development activities.

Professional Writing Assistants must demonstrate a commitment to promoting the success of a diverse, multicultural population, as well as an ability to work effectively in a team-based environment, seeking continuous improvement and adherence to the community college philosophy.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree from a regionally-accredited college or university (or combination of experience and education equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree).

Previous experience providing writing support to adult learners as a tutor, peer assistant, teaching assistant, academic coach, teacher, or some combination thereof

Basic knowledge of writing center theory and pedagogy

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in rhetoric and composition, English, writing, linguistics, or communication, or certification in TESOL.

Previous experience working in a writing center as a tutor, peer assistant, teaching assistant, academic coach, teacher, or some combination thereof

Previous experience working with college-level writers

Coursework in writing center studies
