Program Overview
Advise
MI is an Ameri Corps program hosted by the Michigan College Access Network. Members in the program serve as college advisers in selected high schools or as coaches in selected colleges across Michigan, particularly in communities with low college‑going rates and low adult educational attainment rates. Members placed in high schools serve alongside high‑school counselors and other school professionals; advisers support students as they transition from high school to postsecondary education.
After intensive training, advisers will help students navigate the college‑exploration process, retake admissions tests, apply to suitable colleges, complete the FAFSA, secure financial aid, and matriculate to college. Members placed in colleges support a defined cohort of 100–150 students who face significant barriers, focusing on increasing persistence and completion. Completion coaches advocate for students, foster connections, integrate into campus support structures, identify community resources, organize group activities, facilitate 1:1 meetings, and remind students of key deadlines and workshops through electronic campaigns.
After intensive training, coaches will help students navigate complex college systems and processes, identify resources, and establish a sense of belonging to successfully persist to completion.
Members serve a minimum of 1,200 hours over 9.5 months (40 hrs/week), are required to complete program training, live within 45 minutes of the service site, and adhere to all regulations and requirements of Ameri Corps members.
