Art Educators

Art educators instruct students in the basic principles of art and art history. They are creative and talented professionals who teach students of all ages drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking skills and techniques, to name a few. The ideal candidate would have a passion to build an environment of trust and openness within the studio to nurture individual creative potential, promoting capable and confident creative thinkers.

The art teacher guides students through an artistic thinking process, from determining a focus, developing an idea, creating work around the concept, and finally sharing work and reflecting on it. A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of Sacred Heart Schools as articulated in the Network of Sacred Heart School's Educational Philosophy is essential.

Essential Functions
  • Knows and can apply elements of design and modern principles of art
  • Plan lessons on art and art history in accordance with students' learning objectives
  • Prepare the classroom by gathering and setting up equipment
  • Develop students' drawing, coloring, and painting techniques
  • Conduct instruction on the use of a variety of media such as graphite and charcoal pencils, as well as oil, acrylic, and watercolor paint, and clay
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities
  • Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment
  • Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize the time required for distribution and collection
  • Evaluate each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepare progress reports
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work for the school and the community
  • Attend and support key student experiences, including the beginning-of-year retreat and Spring Class Trip.
  • Attend faculty meetings and parent-teacher conferences
Basic Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, or other related field, with a teaching endorsement
  • Prior experience as an art teacher
  • Demonstrated excellence in a variety of art techniques
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Capacity to supervise group work
  • Outstanding planning and problem-solving skills
  • Supportive, flexible disposition
  • Ability to work well with students and colleagues; willingness to be an active, enthusiastic member of the Sacred Heart community
  • Clay studio experience is not required, but preferred.
