Job OverviewThe Special Education Paraprofessional supports teachers and students in the classroom, providing individualized assistance and facilitating learning for students with special needs.
Minimum Qualifications- High School Diploma.
- Preferred:
Associate’s degree or higher; two years of college coursework; or passing score on the Basic Skills Test of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC). - Experience working with school-aged children preferred.
- Proficient reading and writing abilities.
- Ability to work effectively with children and follow direction.
- Physically able to lift 50 pounds.
- Pleasant, cooperative, and flexible.
- Willing and able to assist students with toileting and custodial care needs.
- Positive attitude to foster a supportive classroom environment.
- Willing to learn and perform health care needs after training.
- Understanding of assistive technology and ability to support students with disabilities.
- Work with individual students to reinforce learning based on their needs, interests, and abilities.
- Assist the teacher in developing strategies to reinforce material and skills.
- Operate and care for instructional equipment.
- Help students master assigned equipment or instructional materials.
- Guide independent study, enrichment, or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
- Serve as a source of information for substitute teachers.
- Communicate with the Special Education teacher regarding students’ assignments, behavior, and information from the General Education teacher.
- Support students in all aspects of their day, including in General Education classes, hallways, lunchroom, etc.
- Record requested data from teachers, social workers, or administrators.
- Participate in in-service training programs as assigned.
- Aid students needing assistance in self-care, including toileting and health care duties as required.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Director of Special Education or the building Principal.
