Position SummaryThe Instructional Designer (R&D) designs and creates engaging and effective learning experiences for research and development projects. The role collaborates with internal and external experts, uses traditional online development tools such as Course Arc, Camtasia, and Storyline, and leverages AI tools and new technologies to produce and deploy online learning. The designer provides consultation, training, and support to team members and external clients, contributes to overall content creation strategy, and applies sound instructional design principles.
EssentialFunctions & Responsibilities
- Design and develop instructional content, assessments, and courses for online, hybrid, and face‑to‑face learning environments.
- Collaborate with internal staff and external consultants in the course development process, promoting sound instructional design principles.
- Provide consultation and support to internal and external stakeholders on design and functionality of learning experiences.
- Leverage AI tools to efficiently design and develop instructional content while ensuring accuracy, ethics, and data privacy.
- Meet project timelines for self and external team members.
- Provide maintenance support on R&D products.
- Use multimedia and instructional technology tools to create educational content.
- Explain instructional design theories, practices, and methods used in learning design.
- Ensure content aligns with applicable state, national, or other education or training standards.
- Apply quality and accessibility standards such as Quality Matters and WCAG to learning experiences.
- Apply feedback and conduct learner feedback reviews, participating in debrief meetings to suggest solutions.
- Create and gather documentation (design documents, course descriptions, syllabi) and ensure proper organization.
- Consult and collaborate with team members, contributing to continuous improvement of design practices through professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Attend regular staff and departmental meetings (in person or remotely).
- Attend company‑wide functions as requested.
- Participate in professional learning opportunities per organization or supervisor’s request.
- Bachelor’s degree with 9 credits in instructional design or educational technology, or equivalent education and experience. Master’s degree strongly preferred.
- 0–3 years of experience as an instructional designer and with developing online courses.
- Experience with a major CMS or LMS (Brightspace preferred).
- Experience with multimedia and content development applications such as Storyline, Adobe CS2‑6 Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver), Camtasia, Audacity, H5P, and Course Arc.
Education and/or Experience
- Experience developing online or blended K–12 courses.
- Experience as an online and/or classroom teacher.
- Experience with SCORM‑compliant or xAPI content development.
- Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design and learning principles.
- Demonstrated knowledge of assessment methodology and online assessment.
- Attention to detail and strong writing skills for design specifications and project proposals.
- Interpersonal skills and ability to work well with a remote team.
- Ability to manage a complex workload and aggressive schedules.
- Proficiency with learning management systems (Brightspace preferred) and course creation/editing applications (Course Arc, Storyline, Camtasia).
