Student employees in this position will work with the Building Training and Assessment Center (BTAC), a collaboration with Lansing Community College, Michigan State University and the Lansing School District. This program is designed to build and expand a knowledgeable and diverse energy workforce pipeline by educating and training college-level students in HVAC, energy systems, and related topics through a structured, hands‑on educational experience.

The goal is to provide students with real‑world experience while making a measurable impact on local K‑12 schools and small commercial buildings (under 50,000 square feet) by helping reduce their energy use, operational costs, and carbon footprint.

Student employees are involved in a range of meaningful activities, including learning how energy-consuming equipment and processes work, analyzing utility bills to establish baseline energy usage, and calculating energy, cost, and carbon savings. Under the guidance of program faculty, each student participates in approximately two to three assessments per semester, where they will help identify and quantify energy‑saving opportunities for clients.

Students also collaborate with facility personnel to plan assessments, conduct site visits, and prepare professional reports that summarize findings and recommendations. The assessment process includes a pre‑assessment meeting with plant personnel, an on‑site visit to identify opportunities for energy efficiency and operational improvements, and a post‑assessment phase that involves data analysis, working with utility providers for financing options, and preparing a final report.

This position offers paid, hands‑on experience, leadership and mentorship opportunities, and a strong resume‑building experience. Work is available during the academic year and over the summer, with flexible scheduling based on assessment needs. Students will engage with a diverse network of peers, faculty, and clients, and receive training in energy efficiency, waste reduction, and assessment methods. Most importantly, participants will see the positive impact of their work in real‑world settings.

We are looking for students from a variety of majors; ideal candidates are strong communicators, team players, and problem‑solvers who are passionate about sustainability and energy efficiency. A multi‑semester commitment is preferred, ideally spanning from Spring through Fall of 2026–2027.
