The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) provides leadership, resources, support, and guidance to approximately 200,000 school district staff serving approximately 1.5million students in public and non-public schools and 39,000 students inspecial education transition services. In addition, MDE provides administrative support and supervision for the Michigan School for the Deaf and the Library of Michigan.
MDE is responsible for stateeducation leadership in a local control state and works to implement state and federal education laws, disburse state and federal resources, licenseeducators, develop state summative assessments and accountability systems, createstate academic standards, and coordinate school health and nutrition addition, in developing and promoting the state’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, MDE works with partner education entities and stakeholders to improvepublic education for children across the state.
MDE’s role in the improvement of public education extends to providing information and feedback to public policy-makers, convening educators on public policy issues, recommending draftlanguage on legislation, and developing guidance to districts on statutorychanges adopted at the state and federal levels.

Since 1828, during Michigan'sterritorial days, the Library of Michigan has served state government and thepeople of Michigan much as the Library of Congress works at the federal level.
The library’s early task was to collect, compile and store Michigan territoriallaws and other important documents that formed the basis for Michigan’s government today. The library's responsibility has expanded toinclude a comprehensive collection of Michigan related documents, journals,books, and other materials.

West Kalamazoo Street, Lansing, MI. Hybrid flexible schedule of in-person andremote work arrangement.
The State Librarian serves as chief administrative officer, provides critical leadership, and directs strategic, financial, operational, and personnel activities of the Library of Michigan; is a member of the department’s leadership team and the deputy superintendent’s admin directors leadership team; serves as secretary on the Library of Michigan’s advisory Board of Trustees; and serves as a board member of the Library of Michigan Foundation.
The state librarian is the guardian of the quality of library services statewide and actively facilitates cooperation among and between libraries of all types within the state and with library related organizations.
