Overview
The City of Lansing Public Service Department is recruiting for a full-time Engineer to join our dedicated and professional team. This position focuses on transportation-related public works and infrastructure projects, including traffic signals, non-motorized facilities, traffic control, signage, and traffic calming. The successful candidate will contribute to shaping the City’s future with skills in project, construction, and personnel management. Responsibilities- Support transportation-related public works projects, including traffic signals, non-motorized facilities, traffic control, signage, and traffic calming.
- Assist in project, construction, and personnel management to perform essential duties of the position.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver s license.
Education
- Bachelor s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or similar technical field.
Experience
- Engineer I (36):
No specific type or amount is required. - Engineer II (38):
Three (3) years of progressively responsible full-time professional experience in the design, inspection and/or management of public infrastructure projects including streets, sewers, bridges, trails/pathways, sidewalks and/or traffic signals. Master’s degree can substitute for one year of experience. - Engineer III (40):
Five (5) years of progressively responsible full-time professional experience in the design, inspection and/or management of public infrastructure projects including streets, sewers, bridges, trails/pathways, sidewalks, wastewater treatment plant, pump stations, and/or traffic signals. Master’s degree can substitute for one year of experience.
- Knowledge of engineering principles as they relate to public works projects including streets, storm drains, sewers, and buildings; geotechnical engineering principles (soil structure and characteristics); drafting and mapping principles and techniques; surveying methods and materials testing; knowledge of estimating and project management.
- Proficiency with computers and software including spreadsheets, word processing, databases, CAD applications and engineering-specific programs; ability to quickly learn new software.
- Ability to analyze, interpret, and explain technical plans and procedures, regulations and codes; to prepare engineering plans, specifications and field reports; to write clear and concise reports; to supervise others; and to maintain complex record systems.
