Job Overview
This position serves as the Michigan Department of Transportation’s statewide ancillary structures specialist and consultant deputy project manager. Ancillary structures include retaining walls, sound walls, cantilever signs, truss signs, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) structures, lighting towers, non-frangible and frangible lights, strain poles, mast arms, culverts, wood poles, and traffic signals. The role functions as the statewide specialist for ancillary structures in asset management, making strategic recommendations on key performance indices, condition forecasting, funding needs, and life‑cycle cost analysis tools for capital planning.
The position also oversees research projects, special studies, policy document updates, risk assessments, and training, reviews preliminary and final plans associated with ancillary structure, road, and bridge design projects, and performs complex assignments requiring expertise in structural capabilities, limitations, and appropriate material applications for design, inspection, and inventory. Additionally, the role manages consultants for innovative projects and oversees the Ancillary Structure Program Manager Consultant Contract.
- Develop and implement strategic recommendations for ancillary structure asset management.
- Oversee research projects, special studies, policy updates, risk assessments, and training initiatives.
- Review preliminary and final plans for ancillary structure, road, and bridge design projects.
- Perform complex assignments requiring knowledge of structural capabilities and material applications.
- Manage consultants for innovative projects and administer the Ancillary Structure Program Manager Consultant Contract.
- Conduct quality control reviews and provide direction to various work groups for highway projects related to ancillary structure design, inspection, and inventory development.
Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.
ExperienceFour years of professional experience equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including two years equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11 or one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 12 or Transportation Engineer Licensed 12.
Requirements- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Possession of a registered professional engineering license as required by the State of Michigan.
- Completion of official college transcripts and/or foreign degree evaluation, if applicable.
- Completion of pre‑employment drug test, physical exam, and background check (criminal and driving records).
- Compliance with MDOT policies regarding the use of artificial intelligence software in the selection process.
