Position Summary:
Responsible for engineering activities related to the planning, designing, constructing, operating, or maintaining a broad spectrum of utility and non-utility engineering work in all 6 major areas of Electric Generating Stations, Drinking Water Conditioning Plants, Steam Heating Plants, Chilled Water Production Plants, 138kV to 13.2kV Electric Substations Facilities, and general commercial facilities. Most projects involve working in a multi-disciplined engineering environment with mechanical, electrical, civil/structural, or other engineering disciplines working together as needed to complete projects of varied sizes.
Typical projects involve some or all of the following activities: investigations, studies, estimating, economic evaluations, budgeting, scheduling, designing, drawing development and review, construction and commissioning support, training, and project management.
Essential Functions:
- Mastery of all principal duties and responsibilities for Level 1-3 Engineer
- Applies broad knowledge of principles and practices in specific practice areas.
- Independently evaluates, selects, and adapts standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
- Acquires general knowledge of principles and practices of related fields and the ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams.
- Designs a complete project, system, component, or process or creates complete plans, reports, or analyses.
- Works on multiple projects/tasks of moderate size or portions of major projects.
- Prepares complete technical documents.
- Designs and conducts experiments and analyzes and interprets data.
- Identifies and formulates solutions to problems.
- Assigns tasks to and directs engineers, technicians, and administrative staff.
- Plans and coordinates detailed aspects of engineering work.
- Prepares scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
- Assists with proposals to provide professional services or obtain funding for engineering projects or programs.
- Seals documents for permits, plans, discipline-specific materials, etc., that meet the requirements of their license.
- Works cooperatively with others to accomplish team goals and organizational objectives.
- Assigns work to others in order to maximize time for strategic thinking and actions. Provides clear guidelines, monitors, redirects, and sets limits as needed. Provides challenging assignments, shares authority, and provides resources and support.
- Makes sound decisions based upon a mixture of data-driven analysis, expertise, experience, and judgment; collects relevant information, seeking input from others, and identifies connections and/or root causes of problems.
- Persistently moves in the face of ambiguity, dilemmas, and resistance to get completion of changes in an organized way; adapts with flexibility to and copes with changing situations while maintaining focus on goals.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Job Specifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Typical Degrees:
Power Systems Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electrical/Computer Engineering - Non-Typical Degrees accepted along with experience may qualify as an equal:
Engineering for Energy Sustainability, Biosystems Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, and Software Engineering. Because universities have different names for the same curriculums, any non-typical curriculum or any curriculum not listed above should be evaluated based on the content of the individual curriculum to ensure compatibility. - Typically has a minimum of seven to ten years of engineering experience. Will consider depth and breadth of experience
- Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally
- Predictable and reliable work schedule
- Comply with all BWL policies and work rules
- Ability to respond to emergent or unexpected events within the BWL service territory
- Ability to effectively work in remote and open-office environments
- Michigan driver's license with an acceptable record
- Shall be familiar with and capable of properly applying national, state, and local codes, including but not limited to National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICEA), and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
- Professional Engineer License (PE)
- Advanced degree in Engineering.
- Knowledge of Office 365 applications
- Applicable utility experience or other relevant project experience
- Familiar with and capable of properly applying reference tools such as RUS Design Guide for Rural Substations.
