Position Summary:


Responsible for engineering activities related to the planning, designing, constructing, operating, or maintaining a broad spectrum of utility and non-utility engineering work in all 6 major areas of Electric Generating Stations, Drinking Water Conditioning Plants, Steam Heating Plants, Chilled Water Production Plants, 138kV to 13.2kV Electric Substations Facilities, and general commercial facilities. Most projects involve working in a multi-disciplined engineering environment with mechanical, electrical, civil/structural, or other engineering disciplines working together as needed to complete projects of varied sizes.

Typical projects involve some or all of the following activities: investigations, studies, estimating, economic evaluations, budgeting, scheduling, designing, drawing development and review, construction and commissioning support, training, and project management.


Essential Functions:
  • Mastery of all principle duties and responsibilities for Level 1-2 Engineer
  • Develop broad knowledge and skills in specific practice areas.
  • Works on small projects/tasks or portions of larger projects/tasks.
  • Performs moderate design/planning/analysis tasks.
  • Evaluates, selects, applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for conventional design/planning/analysis projects with few complex features.
  • Collaboratively uses judgement to determine adaptations in methods for non-routine aspects of assignments.
  • Prepares portions of, or entire, technical documents.
  • Edits technical documents such as plans, applications, reports, specifications, etc.
  • Perform research and investigation.
  • Assigns tasks to and coordinates work with entry-level engineers, technicians, or administrative staff.
  • Assists in determining schedule and budget requirements.
  • Those who have a PE license seals documents of their designs for permits, plans, etc., that meet the requirements of their license.
  • Is self-aware of own emotions and socially aware of others' feelings and emotions and their impact on performance. Displays self-control and adaptability when working with others to achieve results.
  • Achievement-oriented, feeling a sense of urgency to reach goals on time, if not before.
  • Enjoys positions of responsibility and authority. Desires and chooses to be in a leadership position.
  • Establishes a systematic course for self and/or others to assure accomplishment of objectives. Determines priorities and allocates time and resources effectively.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Typical Degrees:
    Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering.
  • Non-Typical Degrees accepted along with experience may qualify as an equal:
    Engineering Physics, Engineering Thermal Energy Systems, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mining and Geological Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Engineering and Technology Management, Metallurgical & Material Engineering, Mining and Mineral Processing, Nuclear Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, and General Engineering. Because universities have different names for the same curriculums, any non-typical curriculum or any curriculum not listed above should be evaluated based on the content of the individual curriculum to ensure compatibility.
  • Typically has a minimum of five to eight years of engineering experience. Will consider depth and breadth of experience
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally
  • Predictable and reliable work schedule
  • Comply with all BWL policies and work rules
  • Ability to respond to emergent or unexpected events within the BWL service territory
  • Ability to effectively work in remote and open-office environments
  • Michigan driver's license with an acceptable record
  • Shall be familiar with and capable of properly applying national, state, and local codes, including but not limited to American National Standards Institute (ANSI), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), International Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
Preferred:
  • Fundamentals of Engineer (FE).
  • Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan (PE).
  • Advanced degree in Engineering.
  • Knowledge of Office 365 applications
  • Applicable utility experience or other relevant project experience
  • Familiar with and capable of properly applying reference tools such as RUS Design Guide for Rural Substations.
  • Experience in four or more of the following areas:
