Transportation Project Manager
The Transportation Project Manager leads complex transportation infrastructure projects from procurement through final design, serving as the primary client contact and ensuring successful delivery by effectively managing scope, schedule, budget, and multidisciplinary teams. This role oversees projects funded through state and federally assisted programs, maintains strong client relationships, and upholds high standards of quality, safety, and technical excellence while supporting ongoing business development efforts.
Responsibilities- Lead transportation infrastructure projects funded through state and federally assisted programs from initial procurement through detailed final design.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, facilitating meetings and maintaining clear, consistent communication throughout the project lifecycle.
- Define and manage project scope, procedures, schedules, and budgets while ensuring all contractual obligations are fully met.
- Plan, organize, and coordinate multi-disciplinary teams across multiple office locations to deliver projects efficiently and on time.
- Track project performance, including fees, staffing levels, schedules, and forecasts, and proactively identify and manage risks to keep projects on track.
- Ensure adherence to established quality control processes, safety requirements, and documentation standards across all project activities.
- Review, oversee, and provide guidance on technical deliverables prepared by project teams to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Collaborate closely with accounting teams to ensure accurate and timely billing, invoicing, and collections for assigned projects.
- Support business development efforts by participating in client outreach, preparing and reviewing proposals, contributing to interviews, and assisting with project transition activities.
- Promote a collaborative, professional project environment that encourages innovation, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
- 10–15 years of experience in roadway and transportation engineering projects.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Demonstrated experience managing transportation projects from procurement through detailed design.
- Strong project management skills, including scope, schedule, budget, and risk management.
- Proficiency with Micro Station and Open Roads Designer.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Experience with roadway design, highway design, and civil design.
- Experience conducting traffic studies and traffic analysis.
- Experience with land development and construction-related design coordination.
- Ability to coordinate and lead multi-disciplinary teams across multiple office locations.
- Strong communication and client-facing skills, with the ability to serve as the primary client contact.
- Ability to track and analyze project performance metrics, including fees, staffing, schedules, and forecasts.
- Knowledge of quality control, safety, and documentation standards applicable to transportation projects.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working on local transportation projects within the state of Michigan.
- Experience with projects involving state departments of transportation, such as MDOT.
- Familiarity with state and federally assisted funding programs for transportation projects.
- Experience supporting business development activities, including client outreach, proposal development, and interviews.
- Ability to mentor and guide project team members in technical and project management best practices.
This role primarily operates in a professional office environment, with a preference for the Transportation Project Manager to work on site in Lansing or Waterford, Michigan, five days per week.
