Underwriter, Risk Manager/Analyst, Credit Analyst
The Credit Underwriter is a developing professional role that integrates in-depth specialty knowledge with a solid understanding of industry standards and practices. The role demonstrates a good understanding of how the team and area integrate with others in accomplishing the objectives of the subfunction/job family. The Underwriter applies analytical thinking and knowledge of data analysis tools and methodologies, reduces complex information to a systematic, communicable format, and demonstrates communication and diplomacy skills necessary to exchange potentially complex or sensitive information.
The role involves moderate but direct impact through close contact with the businesses' core activities, and quality and timeliness of service provided affect the effectiveness of the team and other closely related teams.
- Reviews or re‑underwrites pre‑funded and post‑closing files for credit quality, data integrity, and adherence to CMI credit policy and investor guidelines.
- Provides written management summaries with feedback or recommendations on all loans reviewed.
- Works with the business to identify training needs and provides detailed analysis on any identified trends.
- Identifies and documents policy or process variations and works with Operations to provide written and verbal feedback, including training or mentoring opportunities.
- Interfaces directly with all levels of internal originations and credit policy staff, as well as external customers (correspondent lenders), to maintain excellent customer service while ensuring the quality and integrity of loans purchased or underwritten by CMI.
- Assesses the risk level of each loan on a transactional basis, forwarding referrals, as necessary, to the Fraud Prevention and Investigation Unit, Vendor or Collateral Risk Management, and the Repurchase unit.
- Interfaces with Risk Management, Originations, and/or Credit Policy staff, when applicable, to resolve issues.
- Performs other duties and functions as assigned.
- Appropriately assesses risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating consideration for the firm’s reputation and safeguarding Citi, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations, applying sound ethical judgment in conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing, and reporting control issues with transparency.
- 5–8 years of related experience.
- Conventional underwriting experience; FHA/VA designation preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of CMI underwriting policy and of agency and secondary market underwriting and document requirements.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to communicate at all levels.
- Thorough knowledge of credit scoring, analytical problem‑solving, and negotiation skills.
- Bachelor’s or university degree, or equivalent experience.
