Position Description

The Planning, Research, and Accreditation Section is responsible for managing the department’s Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) accreditation process, developing policies and procedures, and conducting research and special studies that support the mission and goals of the department. This position functions as the department’s lead policy writer, responsible for producing and maintaining effective, high-quality written directives with a specialized focus on the department’s Official Orders, which document all permanent department policies.

This position is responsible for collaborating with department leadership, internal and external subject matter experts, and other stakeholders to ensure the department’s Official Orders are aligned with current law and industry best practices with an ongoing focus on identifying efficiencies to ensure organizational effectiveness and compliance with law enforcement accreditation standards. The position will also conduct special studies, research projects, and program evaluations to determine department needs and to assist in department planning.

The decisions and outcomes associated with this position play a critical role in the agency, particularly in supporting the department’s accreditation compliance. This position functions in a bias free manner.

The Michigan State Police (MSP) is a full-service policing agency with statewide jurisdiction, providing over 60 different services either directly to Michigan residents or in support of other law enforcement agencies. The MSP personnel most visible to the public are the uniform troopers whose primary responsibilities include traffic enforcement, crime prevention and investigation, and community engagement and service.

• Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.
• OR at least one year of professional experience in the state of Michigan classified service.

• Four years of professional experience, including two years equivalent to the experienced (P11) level or one year equivalent to the advanced (12) level.

This position requires passing a pre-employment screening, including passing a drug screen, criminal history background check, and a fingerprint check by the Michigan State Police.
