This position ensures the Department’s activities comply with the National Environmental Policy Act’s mandate to identify, analyze and document potential social, environmental and economic impacts for proposed transportation projects. The role includes preparing environmental clearance documents for proposed transportation projects and regional system plans, interacting with the public and staff of other divisions, departments and agencies to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal legislation, providing technical assistance, and assisting in the management and analysis of planning studies and operational studies, as well as related consultant contracts for project development activities.
SalaryBased on education and experience, the salary listed is a range reflecting the minimum rate at the entry (9) level through the maximum rate at the experienced (P11) level. Candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.
Responsibilities- Ensure compliance with NEPA requirements for proposed transportation projects.
- Prepare and submit environmental clearance documents.
- Interact with the public and with staff of other divisions, departments, and agencies to ensure state and federal environmental legislation compliance.
- Provide technical assistance and respond to inquiries and concerns.
- Assist in the management and analysis of planning studies, operational studies, and related consultant contracts for project development activities.
Possession of a bachelor’s degree in any major with at least 30 semester (45 term) credits in one or a combination of the following: planning (city, community, environmental, regional, and/or urban), environmental studies and/or sustainability, environmental sciences, engineering, statistics, mathematics, geography, geographic/geospatial information systems, logistics and/or supply chain management, or economics.
We may consider applicants that will be obtaining a bachelor’s degree by May 31, 2026.
Experience- Transportation Planner 9:
No specific type or amount of experience is required. - Transportation Planner 10:
One year of professional experience in the planning, mapping, or assessment of transportation, land use, environmental, or community systems equivalent to a Transportation Planner 9. - Transportation Planner 11:
Two years of professional experience in the planning, mapping, or assessment of transportation, land use, environmental, or community systems equivalent to a Transportation Planner, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Planner 10.
- If applicable, attach a copy of your official college transcripts and/or foreign degree evaluation with your application. for the State of Michigan definition of an Official College Transcript. Applicants who possess foreign degrees must have their academic credentials evaluated or converted into U.S. educational equivalents. Civil Service accepts evaluations from organizations listed on the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc.
