Probation & Parole Officer

Location:

Livingston, MT

Position Summary:

The Probation & Parole Officer performs a combination of social work and law enforcement duties to manage offenders, ensuring public safety and encouraging rehabilitation.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and counsel 80–100 offenders, cooperating with the public and criminal justice system.
  • Conduct pre‑sentence investigations and prepare written pre‑sentence investigation reports with placement recommendations.
  • Recommend rehabilitation plans, treatment options, conditions of probation, and appropriate incarceration levels to the District Court and Parole Board.
  • Refer offenders to community resources and programs, use risk‑and‑needs assessments, and monitor client compliance.
  • Investigate alleged violations of probation or parole, enforce policies, and obtain search warrants when required.
  • Arrest and detain violators, testify in district court and related hearings.
  • Respond to hostile or dangerous situations using OC spray, firearms, and handcuffs.
  • Work variable shifts, including nights and weekends, and be available 24/7 when called upon.
  • Travel up to 10 % of the time for duties and training.
Required Qualifications
  • College degree in criminology, psychology, social work, sociology, guidance & counseling, or formal training in behavioural sciences.
  • POST Basic Certification after training at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and one year of employment with the Department of Corrections.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Age 18 years or older.
  • Completed criminal history search and fingerprinting.
  • No convictions that would lead to imprisonment in a federal or state penitentiary.
  • Good moral character as determined by background screening.
  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Valid Montana driver’s license.
Experience / Knowledge
  • Experience in corrections, detainment, criminology, education, medicine, psychiatry, psychology, law, law enforcement, social work, sociology, psychiatric nursing, or guidance & counseling may substitute for educational requirements on a 1‑year‑experience equals 9‑months‑education basis, subject to approval.
Legal & Compliance

Disqualifying conditions include convictions or court orders related to domestic violence or firearms prohibitions (Brady Act & Lautenberg Amendment). The Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 and Tobacco Free policies also apply.
