Capital Area Community Services, Inc. is hiring a Nutrition Coordinator for our Head Start Program in Lansing, MI.

This is a full-time position, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year.
Starting pay is $36.74

Job Summary:

Plans, directs, oversees, and coordinates nutrition services in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, Child Care Food Program, and Michigan Child Care Licensing Rules. Provides training, support, and consultation to staff and parents related to child nutrition, food safety, food handling, meal service, and special dietary needs. Develops policies and procedures for food and nutrition services.

Job Requirements:

Education and/or certification:
  • Registered Dietitian/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
Experience:
  • Preferred knowledge/experience in early childhood nutrition
  • Preferred knowledge/experience in food safety/sanitation (or Serv Safe certification)
  • Preferred knowledge/experience in the CACFP (Child Care Food Program)
  • Preferred knowledge/experience in working with diverse low-income families
Must possess the ability to:
  • Maintain professional licenses and certification
  • Work on multiple tasks and be able to organize and prioritize tasks efficiently
  • Properly stoop, bend, lift, climb stairs, and expend moderate physical exertion
  • Work at Head Start centers within Ingham, Clinton, Eaton, and Shiawassee Counties

Essential Functions:
  • Demonstrate communication and interpersonal relationship skills
  • Remain open to suggestions and new ideas
  • Develop and conduct workshops and training for staff and parents
  • Meet periodically with Manager to provide operational data, share observations and concerns, and evaluate the progress of the program and component
  • Work closely with program supervisors to communicate the objectives and plans of the Nutrition component of the program regarding methods and procedures for integrating activities
  • Participate in meetings to provide input regarding special concerns about specific children or families and to assist in developing plans to meet those needs
  • Program Services:
  • Directs and coordinates food and nutrition services for the CACS, Inc. Head Start program.
  • Establishes and maintains vended meals contracts.
  • Coordinates compliance with provisions of annual CACFP agreement and triennial reviews.
  • Provides staff training in nutrition, CACFP, food safety/sanitation, and early childhood feeding.
  • Plans monthly breakfast and snack menus that comply with CACFP requirements and Head Start Performance Standards and prepares accompanying purchase orders.
  • Visits classrooms two-three times per year to conduct:
    • CACFP monitoring reviews.
    • Nutrition monitoring reviews
  • Conducts height/weight screening for children with nutritionally 'at risk' BMI.
  • Consults with families who have nutritional concerns regarding their child's growth, eating habits, food allergies, or other special dietary needs.
  • Follows-up with parents and health care providers to address nutrition-related health concerns.
  • Writes nutrition policies and procedures.
  • Provides nutrition article for the monthly newsletter.
  • Posts monthly menus/recipes and other helpful food and nutrition resources on agency website.
  • Seeks to expand and enrich nutrition education resources for use in classrooms.
  • Monitors food expenditures to help identify problem areas.
  • Prepares and submits required reports and records related to the CACFP and Head Start program.
  • Writes the CACS Head Start Nutrition Plan.
  • Utilizes agency database to maintain documentation related to individual children's nutrition status/plans.
  • Other:

    Assist with other duties as defined and/or requested by an Administrator or Supervisor when additional work is necessary to fulfill the obligations of the program.

    Must undergo and satisfactorily pass at the time of hire and periodically thereafter:
    • Criminal History Search (including finger-printing)
    • Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry Clearance
    • Physical examination, Tuberculosis (TB) test and drug screen. Drug screen includes marijuana.
