Responsibilities
- Perform efficient and effective plasma collection from donors by venipuncture, monitoring the pheresis process, and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Conduct all aspects of the pheresis procedure and plasma collection, including donor set‑up, monitoring, and disconnect, in compliance with SOPs.
- Perform venipuncture in accordance with SOPs and FDA guidelines to initiate the pheresis process.
- Evaluate donor vein performance, make necessary corrections to expedite donation, and ensure product quality and donor safety.
- Educate new donors on therapeutic products made from donated plasma, explaining the screening process, health tests, appointment system, donation fees, center policies, proper nutrition, and any other relevant information; answer donor questions promptly and professionally.
- Maintain alertness to donor reactions, assist with reactions, or notify appropriate staff.
- Use a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to record incidents during the pheresis process, including machine alerts, alarms, volume variances, and donor adverse events.
- Perform calibrations and verify maintenance as outlined in SOPs; respond to and resolve complex equipment alarms or donor issues.
- Troubleshoot equipment failures; create incident documentation and remove or replace equipment from service as needed.
- Monitor donor flow on the donor floor to ensure continuous turnover; alert the Group Leader or Supervisor of any donor flow issues.
- Collect arm samples or whole‑blood samples from donors for testing.
- Accurately record donor data in the electronic donor information management system as outlined in SOPs.
- Understand policies and procedures related to hyper‑immune programs, if applicable.
- Maintain a clean and efficient work environment and ensure sufficient operating supplies and forms are available; follow all Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and promote safety in all actions.
- Maintain confidentiality of all personnel, donor, and center information.
- Be cross‑trained in other areas to meet the needs of the business.
- Bilingual skills may be required, at the discretion of the organization, to meet business needs.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum twelve (12) months of experience in a medical or health‑care environment preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Persons performing automated plasmapheresis procedures must be at a minimum state certified as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I.
- Current Registered Nurse by the State of California.
