Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Responsible for overseeing the operations of multiple acute care pharmacies within the region (UMH Sparrow Lansing, UMH West, four community hospitals, and others if needed due to future acquisitions). Plan, organize, direct and lead the overall operations of pharmacy services.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Primary contact responsible for managing and maintaining relationships, including conducting quarterly business reviews as required.
  • Develops, implements, and achieves business, operations and clinical goals by effectively planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing all inpatient pharmacy service programs to provide efficient and effective systems.
  • Partner with regional and System pharmacy leadership to define and execute strategic, financial, and operational priorities across the health system.
  • Collaborate with regional executives and leadership teams to align local pharmacy services with system-wide goals and strategic initiatives.
  • Engage stakeholders and drive value and margin initiatives, including strategic expansions in collaboration with UM Health leadership.
  • Provide thought leadership in shaping pharmacy's role in integrated care delivery, patient safety, and high-reliability operations.
  • Provide executive oversight of regional pharmacy operations across all hospitals and affiliate sites.
  • Develop and implement standardized processes and service models to ensure high-quality, efficient pharmacy operations across the region.
  • Guide facility improvements, construction planning, and technology investments that advance system pharmacy capabilities.
  • Ensure consistent clinical pharmacy practice standards across all regional sites, supporting pharmacist-led patient care initiatives.
  • Collaborate with regional and system clinical leaders to deliver safe, effective, and coordinated medication management across the system.
  • Advance system-wide clinical initiatives through collaborative leadership with other senior department leaders.
  • Oversee and optimize financial performance of regional pharmacy services, managing FTEs, capital resources, and operational budgets.
  • Implement cost-saving initiatives and identify opportunities for efficiency and value creation.
  • Partner with system leadership to secure philanthropic support for system pharmacy projects.
  • Ensure system-wide compliance with federal, state, and accreditation standards for all regional pharmacy operations.
  • Partner with key leaders to strengthen a culture of safety and readiness for inspections and audits.
  • Serves as the delegate for duties related to the Controlled Substance Act for the region
  • Lead system pharmacy education and workforce development initiatives, including residency and technician training programs.
  • Drive consistent onboarding, competency management, and professional growth opportunities across regional hospitals.
  • Promote team collaboration and leadership development to advance regional and system goals.
  • Foster strong partnerships with regional leadership teams and affiliate sites to ensure coordinated, high-performing pharmacy services.
  • Represent pharmacy services on system committees and cross-functional initiatives, ensuring alignment with system objectives.
  • Champion system-wide innovation to enhance pharmacy services and medication management across regional sites.
  • Utilize data-driven approaches to lead change, scaling successful initiatives system-wide.
  • Identify and develop new growth opportunities, aligning with long-term system strategy.
  • Manages drug utilization and medication use processes including prescribing, dispensing, administering, managing clinical programs and monitoring patient outcomes to ensure patient safety.
  • Actively manages site finances, participates in all region pharmacy budget preparation and is responsible for expense and revenue performance in assigned cost centers. Effectively monitors and controls the purchasing and inventory management processes. Provides timely reporting and variance explanations to operations and finance departments as required.
  • Actively participates in system drug formulary development, review and implementation with other system pharmacy leaders
  • Establishes and monitors standards for safe, efficiently organized and orderly practice and work environment ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Attracts, develops, and retains staff. Supervises pharmacists, technicians, and other support personnel.
  • Oversees staff education and evaluates competencies of staff. Schedules and conducts regular staff meetings.
  • Prepares and submits management reports as required. Ensures timely and accurate preparation and submission of payroll data.
