AboutThe Role
The Staff Pharmacist is responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate, and compliant dispensing of prescription medications while serving as a trusted clinical resource for patients, providers, and pharmacy team members.
This role reviews and verifies prescription orders, conducts clinical consultations, performs drug utilization reviews, identifies potential medication-related risks, and ensures compliance with all applicable pharmacy regulations. The Staff Pharmacist also provides oversight and mentorship to pharmacy technicians and supports daily pharmacy operations to ensure exceptional quality, accuracy, and patient care.
In the absence of the Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC), this position assumes Pharmacist on Duty responsibilities.
What You’ll Do Medication Review & Clinical Verification- Review, interpret, and verify prescription orders for accuracy, appropriateness, and patient safety.
- Verify medication labeling and dispensing instructions based on prescriber orders.
- Perform comprehensive Drug Utilization Reviews (DUR) to identify potential clinical concerns.
- Evaluate prescriptions for:
- Drug interactions
- Allergies
- Contraindications
- Duplicate therapies
- Incorrect dosing
- Polypharmacy risks
- Conduct final prescription verification before dispensing and shipment.
- Provide patient counseling and education regarding medication therapy.
- Instruct patients on proper medication usage, administration techniques, and potential side effects.
- Conduct clinical consultations to support medication adherence and positive health outcomes.
- Promote safe medication practices through proactive patient engagement and education.
- Communicate directly with physicians and other healthcare providers regarding prescriptions and therapy recommendations.
- Collaborate with prescribers to ensure appropriate drug therapy and safe medication use.
- Facilitate prescription transfers in accordance with federal and state regulations.
- Verify prescription accuracy within the pharmacy management system.
- Support oversight of pharmacy technicians and daily workflow activities.
- Assist inventory teams in maintaining appropriate medication levels to meet patient demand.
- Ensure operational processes support quality, safety, and efficiency standards.
- Identify, investigate, and resolve medication-related and operational issues.
- Follow all applicable federal and state pharmacy laws and regulations.
- Ensure compliance with State Board of Pharmacy requirements and company policies.
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and company standards.
- Support accreditation, compliance, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Stay current with emerging therapies, treatment guidelines, and pharmacy best practices.
- Mentor and support pharmacy technicians and operational staff.
- Serve as a clinical resource to team members.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and a patient-focused culture.
- Assume Pharmacist on Duty responsibilities when designated.
